San Francisco is waking up to a cool, cloud-draped Tuesday, with a partly sunny high near 64°F and a brisk west wind gusting to 24 mph — classic Karl the Fog weather that calls for a windbreaker if you’re hoping for sun today. The National Weather Service says a well-established marine layer stratus deck is holding thanks to an onshore pressure gradient, and while it should mix out inland by midday, patchy stratus will likely cling to the coastline — think Ocean Beach and the Sunset — even during the sunniest part of the afternoon.

Today’s Setup

Overnight lows dipped to 55°F under cloud cover, and today’s high near 64°F comes with west wind at 8 to 16 mph, gusting to 24 mph — enough to rattle patio furniture from the Marina to the Presidio. Stratus redevelops and pushes back inland tonight, with a low around 54°F, gusts to 26 mph, and a chance of patchy light drizzle before dawn.

Best Window To Be Outside

Midday through mid-afternoon, roughly 11 AM to 3 PM PT, is your clearest, driest window before fog creeps back over Golden Gate Park and the Embarcadero. Coastal spots stay grayer longer, while inland pockets like the Mission and Noe Valley see the brightest skies.

Waves, Wind & Safety

The Area Forecast Discussion flags a long-period southwest swell bringing an increased risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents today through Friday. Keep your distance from the waterline at Ocean Beach and the Marin Headlands, and never turn your back on the surf. Gusty west winds also mean securing anything loose outdoors; outdoor furniture covers are worth grabbing before this breezy stretch continues.

What To Wear, Gameday & Tonight’s Dinner

Layer a windbreaker over a long sleeve, and keep something hot in a Stanley quencher tumbler for the commute. The San Francisco Giants host the Toronto Blue Jays at Oracle Park on Wednesday, July 8, with gameday weather mostly sunny and a high near 66°F — solid tailgating conditions if you bring a layer for the bay breeze. Grab a San Francisco Giants jersey or San Francisco Giants fitted cap, and find tickets on StubHub or get tickets on SeatGeek. Chris Stapleton plays Shoreline Amphitheatre on July 8 (a Chris Stapleton t-shirt makes a good souvenir), and Olivia Dean brings her tour to Chase Center on July 10 — an Olivia Dean hoodie or Olivia Dean t-shirt doubles as a smart layer for the cool bay air, with tickets on SeatGeek worth checking before they sell out.

For dinner, a cool, foggy night calls for something warm and simple, pasta or a quick stir-fry both fit. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door, including Amazon Fresh groceries if you’d rather have the cart handled at once.

Next Few Days

The long-term outlook points to a warming trend building through the second half of the week as San Francisco sits on the western edge of high pressure centered over the Southwest. Wednesday climbs to a mostly sunny 66°F, and the daily marine layer pattern, fog in each evening, fog out each morning, sticks around.
