San Antonio is facing showers and thunderstorms this afternoon with an 89% chance of precipitation and a high near 66°F, so plan indoor activities and keep an eye on the sky.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch through 9 PM CT tonight for our area. Moderate rain is already falling across South Central Texas as of midday, with isolated pockets of heavy to very heavy rain possible, especially along and east of the I-35 Corridor and in the Coastal Plains. The NWS forecasters are tracking an upper-level short wave moving east across West Texas, combined with a stationary front lingering over the Coastal Plains and a developing surface low near Brownsville. This setup is creating moderate instability—enough for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms to develop this afternoon, with the main hazards being large hail and damaging wind gusts up to 35 mph.
Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected through this evening, with isolated areas seeing up to 3 inches. If you live near the River Walk, downtown, or in areas prone to flooding around Fort Sam Houston or the Military City neighborhoods, take extra precautions and avoid driving through flooded roadways. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall for our region, so this is not a day for outdoor projects or yard work.
Weekend and Beyond
The good news: this system clears out fast. Saturday looks beautiful—sunny skies, a high near 73°F, and northeast winds around 10 mph. Perfect weather for the iHeartCountry Festival at Moody Center ATX on Saturday if you’re heading to Austin, or for catching the PRESEASON Dallas Wings vs Las Vegas Aces game at Moody Center on Sunday. If you’re planning to attend outdoor events this weekend, a packable rain jacket is smart to have on hand just in case, though rain chances drop to nearly zero after tonight.
Sunday warms to a high near 78°F under mostly clear skies. Looking ahead to Monday and beyond, expect a warming trend heading into the work week, though rain chances return late in the week.
Tonight’s Forecast
Rain showers will likely continue before 7 PM CT, then conditions become mostly cloudy. The low drops to around 53°F with north northeast winds 10 to 20 mph, gusts up to 35 mph. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half inch are possible.
What to Do Today
Skip the grill, the golf course, and any outdoor plans at the Brackenridge Park or along the River Walk. Instead, embrace the cozy weather with a hearty meal—a programmable slow cooker is perfect for rainy days. Set it this morning with beef stew, chili, or a big pot of soup, and come home to a warm dinner. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works beautifully for stovetop comfort food too. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
If you’re a Spurs fan gearing up for the West Conf Semis: Timberwolves at Spurs Rd 2 Game 1 on Monday, May 4 at Frost Bank Center, grab a San Antonio Spurs jersey or San Antonio Spurs hoodie to show your support—and Monday’s weather looks dry and pleasant for any pregame tailgating.
Stay safe, stay dry, and we’ll see you on the sunny side by Saturday!
