San Antonio is looking at a scorcher today, with sunny skies, a high near 101°F, and a Heat Advisory in effect as heat index values climb as high as 109°F — so if you’ve got outdoor plans, push them to the early morning or after sunset.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service’s Austin/San Antonio office says today will “easily be the hottest day of the week,” with the Heat Advisory covering areas along and east of the I-35 corridor — that includes the Alamo City itself. North wind stays light at 0 to 5 mph, which actually works against us: less mixing means the heat sits right on top of us through the afternoon. Tonight stays muggy with a partly cloudy sky and a low around 85°F, with heat index values still hitting 108°F after dark.
Best Window To Be Outside
If you’re headed to the River Walk, Brackenridge Park, or anywhere along the Mission Reach, aim for before 10 AM CT or after 7 PM CT. Midday sun paired with that 109°F heat index is dangerous for extended time outside, especially for kids, pets, and anyone working outdoors near Lackland or Fort Sam Houston.
Flooding And Storm Watch
Separate from today’s heat, the NWS notes major to moderate flooding is continuing on the Nueces River and should persist through the rest of the week, even as other area rivers improve. Forecasters are also watching Tropical Storm Bertha in the Gulf for any potential regional impacts down the road. If you live near low-water crossings, keep an eye on local river gauges and consider having a go bag emergency evacuation kit ready just in case conditions change quickly.
What To Wear Or Bring
Light, breathable layers are the move — quick dry swim trunks or a women’s swimsuit if you’re cooling off in a pool, plus men’s sport sandals for anything outdoors. Keep an insulated tumbler 30oz filled with ice water at all times, and if you’re out in the evening near shaded, grassy areas, mosquito repellent spray is worth packing too.
Weekend Plans
AC/DC brings the POWER UP Tour to the Alamodome on July 24, and Frost Bank Center hosts Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live Glow-N-Fire on July 25 — both indoor venues, a smart call given this heat. Later in the week, don’t miss the Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire concert at Frost Bank Center on July 28, alongside Hamilton at the Majestic Theatre San Antonio the same night. Grab tickets on SeatGeek or find tickets on StubHub before they’re gone. If you’d rather float than dance, that 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge deal (see our outdoor gear deals) is a smart way to survive an afternoon at the pool.
Dinner Tonight
With heat like this, skip the stove — a cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls all work great, especially with a high-powered blender on hand. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Thursday stays hot with a high near 99°F, borderline Heat Advisory territory, before Friday eases slightly to 96°F with a 13% rain chance and lighter SSE winds — a small step in the right direction after this week’s brutal stretch.
