Minneapolis weather today brings a dramatic shift from this morning’s unusually mild start—we’re waking up in the low 60s, which is actually warmer than a typical high for late April—but severe thunderstorms will dominate the afternoon and evening hours.

Today’s Severe Weather Threat

The National Weather Service has issued a Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 5) for severe weather across southern Minnesota and far western Wisconsin, primarily for damaging wind and large hail. Storms will likely fire up between 1 PM and 2 PM CT, with the heaviest activity continuing through the evening. The Storm Prediction Center warns that some storms could turn severe, so if you’re heading to any outdoor events—like the Minnesota Vikings Draft Party at U.S. Bank Stadium or the Timberwolves vs. Nuggets playoff game at Target Center (both today)—keep an eye on the radar and have a weather app handy. Wind gusts could exceed 35 mph, so secure any loose outdoor gear.

Rainfall amounts of a quarter to half inch are possible, with isolated pockets of heavier rain. The Weather Prediction Center has flagged a marginal risk of excessive rainfall, though flash flooding should remain isolated thanks to the storms’ relatively quick movement.

Critical Fire Weather Alert

Far western Minnesota faces critical fire weather conditions this afternoon. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. If you live in that region or are planning any yard work, postpone it until conditions improve. The combination of gusty south winds (15–20 mph with gusts to 35 mph), low humidity, and dry vegetation creates dangerous conditions.

What to Wear & Carry

Start your day layered—it’ll feel pleasant this morning in the upper 60s—but bring a packable rain jacket and grab a compact travel umbrella before heading out. If you’re dealing with spring allergies (and with this much atmospheric instability, pollen counts are likely climbing), consider an allergy relief nasal spray and a pollen count face mask for outdoor activities.

Tonight & Friday

Thunderstorms will likely continue before 7 PM CT, with scattered activity possible until around 1 AM CT. Temperatures will drop to around 45°F by morning. Friday shapes up much nicer—mostly dry with highs near 62°F and just a 6% chance of rain. Perfect for outdoor plans if you had to reschedule today.

Weekend & Beyond

Near-normal highs in the upper 50s and low 60s will stick around through next week. Precipitation chances return early next week, so enjoy the dry stretch Friday through Sunday. If you’re catching the Dethklok & Amon Amarth concert at The Armory tomorrow night or Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday, both venues are indoors—you’ll be fine regardless of the weather.

Dinner Idea

With storms rolling through, tonight’s a perfect night for a cozy indoor meal. A warm pasta dish or stir-fry pairs well with this unsettled weather. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door. Stock up on Amazon Fresh groceries and consider grabbing a HEPA air purifier to keep your indoor air fresh while storms rage outside.

Stay weather-aware today, stay safe, and we’ll have much better conditions by Friday.
