Detroit weather today starts soggy but turns around fast: morning showers and thunderstorms should wind down by mid-morning, leaving a partly sunny, warm afternoon with a high near 87°F. If you’re planning anything outdoors, the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac says the best window is this afternoon, before another round of storms moves in tonight.

Today’s Setup

A stalled front is wringing out scattered showers and thunderstorms across metro Detroit this morning, with the National Weather Service noting activity should weaken and shift east through the late morning. Once that clears, expect a partly sunny, muggy Monday with the high near 87°F and a light west-southwest wind around 6 to 9 mph. Overnight, skies stay mostly cloudy with a low around 68, and forecasters flag another chance of storms developing between 8 and 9 PM ET, with a lower chance lingering into the early-morning hours.

Best Window To Be Outside

If you’re walking Belle Isle, hitting the Riverwalk, or getting yard work done, aim for early-to-mid afternoon once the morning storms clear and skies turn partly sunny. It’s also a solid window to knock out the lawn — if your mower’s battery is on its last leg, the EGO Power+ Battery Deal is worth a look before evening storms roll back in.

Rain, Storms, And Flood Risk

The Weather Prediction Center has placed the Ohio Valley and areas south of the Great Lakes — including the Detroit area’s southern reaches toward the Ohio border — under a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall today into Tuesday, with hourly rates potentially reaching up to 3 inches where storms train over the same spot. The NWS also warns isolated storms tonight into Tuesday, and again Wednesday, could turn severe with damaging winds and large hail, with the greater risk trending toward areas nearer the Ohio border. Have a way to get warnings after dark, and avoid flooded roads.

What To Wear Or Bring

With on-and-off storm chances through midweek, keep a packable rain jacket and a compact travel umbrella within reach. Humidity will make it feel sticky between rounds, so breathable layers beat anything heavy.

Tigers Baseball & Around Town

The Detroit Tigers host the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park on Tuesday, August 11, with the daytime forecast trending drier than today (high near 84°F) but still a 52% chance of showers or storms, mainly earlier in the day per the NWS. Get tickets on SeatGeek and grab Official team gear on Fanatics before first pitch. Downtown that same night, Jack Harlow brings the Monica Tour to The Fillmore Detroit — plan for possible lingering storm chances on the walk in.

Tonight’s Dinner

With storms rolling through on and off, it’s a good night to let a programmable slow cooker do the work — a pot of chili or beef stew (an enameled cast iron Dutch oven works great too) means you’re not stuck grilling between downpours. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Expect another chance of storms Tuesday and again Wednesday, with the Ohio border area seeing the higher potential for stronger cells. The NWS says dry weather should return to close out the work week — good news if you’re planning ahead for the weekend.
