Detroit is waking up to a warm, sunny Monday with temperatures climbing to near 87°F — but the National Weather Service is warning that severe storms could arrive after 4 PM ET, so plan your day with that cutoff in mind.

Today’s Setup

Morning looks beautiful across the metro — from Belle Isle to Corktown — with plenty of sunshine and south-southwest winds building to 9–18 mph by midday. The NWS Detroit/Pontiac office is tracking a broken line of storms expected to push through between roughly 4 PM and 9 PM ET. Those storms carry the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and the NWS notes isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out. This is a legitimate severe weather event, not just a passing sprinkle.

Best Window To Be Outside

Your outdoor window is this morning through about 2 PM ET. Gardeners, golfers, dog walkers along the Riverfront — wrap up any outdoor plans before 3 PM. Winds will gust up to 29 mph ahead of the storms, so secure anything loose in the yard now.

Tigers Game Tonight: Watch That Radar

The Detroit Tigers host the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park tonight — the opener of a four-game series running through May 21. With storms possible right around game time, watch for delay announcements before heading downtown. Tuck a packable rain jacket in your bag just in case, and rep the home team with a Detroit Tigers jersey and Detroit Tigers fitted cap rain or shine.

Tuesday: The Bigger Storm Day

Monday’s risk carries straight into Tuesday (May 19), when the NWS puts precipitation chances at 80% with gusts possibly reaching 32 mph. The Tigers-Guardians game on May 19 at Comerica Park faces an equally uncertain forecast — check the game status before heading out.

If you’d rather ride out the storms indoors, Tuesday evening has strong options. Charlie Puth plays Fox Theatre Detroit on May 19 — a perfect night to be inside a great venue. Grab a Charlie Puth hoodie to wear and Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek if you still need seats. Alter Bridge also brings their What Lies Within Tour to The Fillmore Detroit on May 19 — read our full event preview for details on that one.

What To Bring

It’s warm and humid out there, but keep a packable rain jacket in your bag or car all day. If you’re commuting home on I-75 or I-94 around 5 PM, storms could arrive quickly — have a shelter plan and keep weather alerts turned on your phone.

Dinner Tonight

With storms rolling through this evening, let dinner cook itself. Set up a programmable slow cooker with chili or beef stew before you leave in the morning, or simmer a big pot of soup in your enameled cast iron Dutch oven once you’re home safe. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

The NWS expects cooler, drier conditions Wednesday and Thursday once Tuesday’s system clears out. That mid-week stretch looks much more comfortable for outdoor plans. The Tigers-Guardians series runs through May 21, so keep checking the Detroit weather forecast as the week goes on — better days are just around the corner.

Upcoming Home Games
