Boston is waking up to a soggy Tuesday, with a high near 71°F, patchy fog, and an 87% chance of showers and thunderstorms that could drop 1 to 2 inches of rain by evening — if you’ve got outdoor plans, build in a backup and grab the rain gear before you head out the door.
Today’s Setup
According to the National Weather Service Boston/Norton office, periods of rain — heavy at times — continue through much of the day, with a low-level jet strengthening overnight that could push warm, tropical-moisture rain rates into Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts before dawn. Forecasters say the Cape and Islands carry the best chance for isolated flooding, while much of the rest of the region, still in drought, will mostly benefit from the soaking. Tonight stays unsettled too, with a 60% chance of more showers and storms and a low around 62°F.
Best Window To Be Outside
Wednesday is your day. The NWS expects only a slight chance of showers before 8 AM ET, then partly sunny skies and a high near 79°F with a light 7 mph northeast breeze — good conditions for a walk along the Charles River Esplanade or an evening in the Public Garden. Wednesday night turns even calmer, with partly cloudy skies, a low around 65°F, and a light south wind.
Rain, Wind, Or Heat Risk
The Storm Prediction Center has no severe weather outlook for our area today, and the Weather Prediction Center’s excessive rainfall risk is focused on the Northern Plains and Mid-Atlantic, not New England. Locally, though, the NWS still flags a real flash-flood risk this afternoon and overnight, especially the Cape and Islands, so avoid driving through flooded roads. Keep an eye on the warming trend, too — after today’s cool, rainy pattern, highs jump toward the low 90s by Thursday.
What To Wear Or Bring
Today, pack a rain jacket and waterproof shoes; the northeast wind (8 to 13 mph) makes an umbrella tricky, so a hood is your friend. Headed to Fenway Park tonight for the Noah Kahan concert? Plan for showers — a poncho beats an umbrella in the crowd. Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub before you go. Prefer to stay dry? Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire play TD Garden Wednesday — see our concert weather rundown. With gusty wind today, secure loose patio items with outdoor furniture covers and a bungee cord assortment, and if you’re setting up anything outside later this week, a pop-up canopy tent with weights will earn its keep.
Local Games & Events
Thursday brings the World Cup Quarterfinals: France vs. Morocco to Gillette Stadium (July 9), and with highs near 91°F expected, tailgate gear matters — a portable propane grill and official team gear on Fanatics will get the lot going. Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub before kickoff. Once the warmer, drier air settles in, it’s also a good stretch for Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour stop at TD Garden on July 10 — details in our Shakira weather preview.
Tonight’s Dinner
With rain keeping things damp outside, save the grill for Wednesday’s clearer skies — then it’s perfect grilling weather for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob. An instant-read meat thermometer and a grill brush and scraper set make cleanup and doneness a breeze. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Look for a warming trend through midweek, with Thursday surging toward 91°F, followed by an increased chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms later in the week, per the NWS. Planning ahead for a hot-weather hang once the sun returns? The 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler is a solid, cheap way to beat the heat.
