Boston is starting the week with a high near 72°F and a 40% chance of rain showers today, and it only gets wetter from here — the Boston weather forecast shows showers turning to thunderstorms tonight, so run your errands early and keep a packable rain jacket within reach.
Today’s Setup
According to the National Weather Service, today stays mostly cloudy with scattered showers after 7 AM, a high near 72°F, and southeast wind 6 to 12 mph. Tonight is the bigger story: showers likely before 11 PM give way to showers and thunderstorms, some capable of heavy downpours, with a low around 62°F and a 100% chance of rain. Half an inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible overnight.
Flood Watch Through Tuesday
The Weather Prediction Center has placed the Boston area in a Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall today into Tuesday, and NWS Boston/Norton has expanded a Flood Watch across southeastern Massachusetts. Forecasters describe a tricky setup — a plume of tropical moisture (precipitable water near 1.5 to 2 inches) running into a stalled boundary, which can produce narrow bands of very heavy, slow-moving rain. Localized flash flooding is possible if those bands set up over our area, especially in low-lying and poor-drainage spots around the Charles River and Fenway/Kenmore. Tuesday itself stays unsettled with a 90% chance of rain showers and a high near 68°F.
Best Window To Be Outside
If you’re along the Emerald Necklace, the Esplanade, or Harborwalk, today’s driest stretch is before midday, ahead of the afternoon showers. Hold off on mowing or grilling until Wednesday or Thursday, when NWS Boston expects drier, warmer weather to return.
Gameday & Concert Weather
Megan Moroney’s Cloud 9 Tour hits TD Garden tonight, right as showers move in outside — a good night to grab tickets on SeatGeek and dodge the rain indoors, and Fanatics has official team gear if you’re stopping by beforehand. Tuesday night’s Noah Kahan show at Fenway Park lines up with that 90% rain chance, so pack a compact travel umbrella if you’re tailgating outside the ballpark. Looking ahead, the World Cup Quarterfinal featuring France vs. Morocco lands at Gillette Stadium on July 9, and Shakira brings her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour to TD Garden July 10 — find tickets on StubHub and check out a Shakira t-shirt for the show.
What To Wear Or Bring
Waterproof hiking boots beat sneakers for anyone walking the Freedom Trail or Rose Kennedy Greenway this week, and a packable rain jacket is your best friend through Tuesday’s on-and-off downpours.
Tonight’s Dinner
With rain and possible storms overnight, this is a stay-in, comfort-food kind of evening — think slow cooker chili or a hearty beef stew. A programmable slow cooker or an enameled cast iron Dutch oven makes it easy. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
NWS Boston expects mainly dry, warmer, more humid weather Wednesday into Thursday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms returning by Friday and possibly lingering into Saturday.
