Washington, DC’s weather today is warm and humid with a high near 86°F, partly sunny skies, and a rising chance of afternoon thunderstorms — get outdoor plans wrapped up before early afternoon if you can.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says a stalled cold front will drape across central Virginia into southern Maryland this afternoon, and with dew points sitting in the 70s, there’s enough instability and wind shear for a few strong to severe storms along and southeast of that boundary. For the District, expect a slight chance of showers and storms between 2 PM and 4 PM, another chance between 4 PM and 5 PM, and lingering chances into the evening. West wind stays light at 6 to 9 mph, with amounts generally under a tenth of an inch in town.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning through early afternoon is your driest, most comfortable stretch today. Once we flip the calendar to Thursday, it’s the pick of the week: sunny, a high near 81°F, and light north wind around 7 mph as the true airmass change settles in behind the front. NWS forecasters note below-average temperatures and mainly dry conditions from Thursday through Saturday, so save the yard work — mowing, trimming, patio projects — for Thursday or Friday. If your mower needs a battery swap, the EGO Power+ battery deal running now is worth a look before that dry stretch hits.

Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk

The heaviest excessive-rain threat today is well south of us — the Weather Prediction Center has a Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall centered on Hampton Roads and southeastern Virginia, with a Slight Risk band stretching up toward the Delmarva. DC sits on the northern edge of that broader system, so while a widespread flood isn’t expected here, a stray heavy downpour with today’s storms is possible. Overnight lows drop to around 65°F with a slight chance of lingering storms before 2 AM and patchy fog possible as skies clear.

What To Wear Or Bring

Keep a packable rain jacket handy for anyone heading out this afternoon or evening, and with the muggy air, mosquito repellent spray is smart for any time spent along the Mall or near the Potomac.

Nationals, United, and Noah Kahan Tonight

Noah Kahan plays Nationals Park tonight — read our full concert weather breakdown before you head out, and grab a rain jacket given the storm chances. Fans can still Find tickets on StubHub, and gear up with a Noah Kahan t-shirt or Noah Kahan hoodie. Looking ahead, the Washington Nationals host the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday, July 24 and Friday, July 25 at Nationals Park — Thursday’s sunny, 81°F forecast makes for ideal tailgating weather, so pick up a Washington Nationals jersey or Washington Nationals fitted cap. D.C. United also hosts Toronto FC at Audi Field on July 25.

Dinner Tonight

With storms rolling through, it’s a good night for comfort food — a slow cooker chili or hearty beef stew hits the spot. A programmable slow cooker or enameled cast iron Dutch oven makes it easy. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Thursday and Friday bring sunny, below-average-temperature relief with highs near 81°F and overnight lows in the mid-60s. NWS confidence is still building on when the next rain chance arrives heading into the weekend and early next week, so check back as that timing sharpens up.

Upcoming Home Games
