Washington, DC is heading into a warm, sticky Sunday with a high near 84°F and a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms popping up between noon and 4 PM ET, according to the National Weather Service. Skies stay mostly cloudy through the afternoon, and if you’ve got errands or yard work on the list, the smart move is knocking them out this morning before any cells fire up.
Today’s Setup
A cold front is draped from eastern West Virginia down through the Virginia Piedmont, and the NWS Area Forecast Discussion says the heaviest showers and strongest thunderstorms should stay south and west of the District, mainly from Franklin, WV to Harrisonburg to Fredericksburg. The District, Arlington, and Alexandria could still catch a few isolated showers on the front’s north edge, with rainfall generally under a tenth of an inch. Forecasters expect nearly all areas to clear out by mid-evening.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning through early afternoon is your best bet for the National Mall, Rock Creek Park trails, or a walk along the Potomac River before the noon-to-4 PM window brings the isolated storm risk. East winds stay light at 5 to 9 mph, so it won’t feel blustery, just muggy.
Gameday At Nationals Park
The Washington Nationals host the New York Yankees at Nationals Park today, and gameday weather looks workable: the storm threat should be winding down by early evening, right around first pitch. Tailgaters should still keep an eye on the sky during the afternoon and pack a packable rain jacket just in case a stray shower lingers. Grab tickets on SeatGeek and gear up in a Washington Nationals jersey or Washington Nationals fitted cap for the series opener.

What To Wear Or Bring
A compact travel umbrella earns its keep this afternoon, and with lows only dropping to 67°F tonight, it’ll stay comfortable for an evening walk once any storms clear. If things turn gusty, backup power isn’t a bad idea — the DARAN 288Wh Power Station Just $90 for Prime Members is worth a look.
Dinner Idea
With clouds hanging around and temperatures easing into the 60s tonight, it’s a good excuse for rainy-day comfort food — think slow cooker chili or a hearty beef stew simmered low and slow. A programmable slow cooker or enameled cast iron Dutch oven makes it easy to have dinner ready when the rain clears. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Monday looks drier and just as warm, with a high near 83°F under partly sunny skies and no rain in the forecast. Tuesday heats up further to near 89°F as the NWS flags increasing heat and humidity moving into the middle of the week. By the end of the week, forecasters are watching potential for strong to severe thunderstorms, so it’s worth checking back before locking in weekend plans.
