Washington, DC weather today brings rain showers between 7 AM and 5 PM ET, followed by showers and thunderstorms likely this afternoon and evening, with a high near 77°F. Southwest winds around 15 mph with gusts as high as 29 mph will make it feel breezy, and there’s an 85–90% chance of precipitation throughout the day. The National Weather Service is monitoring a general thunderstorm outlook for the entire area, with the best conditions for storm development expected east of the Blue Ridge as a cold front tracks across the DC metro.

Today’s Setup

A cold front is slowly moving from northwest to southeast across the forecast area. Light rain will overspreads the region this morning before exiting early this afternoon. The real action kicks in later this afternoon and into the evening, when thunderstorms develop along the frontal boundary. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch are possible, with localized heavier amounts in any stronger storms. Wind gusts near 29 mph mean loose outdoor items should be secured.

Best Window to Be Outside

If you absolutely must be outdoors, aim for early morning (before 7 AM ET) or take a break between 2–4 PM ET if the rain pauses briefly. However, the National Weather Service expects persistent wet conditions, so indoor plans are your safest bet. If you’re heading to Nationals Park for tonight’s game between the Washington Nationals vs. Minnesota Twins (May 6), bring an umbrella and consider rain pants waterproof for comfort. Check out a Washington Nationals jersey or Washington Nationals fitted cap to show your support despite the weather. Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub if you’re still deciding.

Rain, Wind & Thunderstorm Risk

The National Weather Service notes that CAPE (atmospheric instability) will be limited by morning rainfall, but there will be plenty of wind shear as an upper-level jet pivots overhead. While severe weather cannot be ruled out, the main threats are heavy rain and gusty winds. Stay weather-aware this afternoon and evening, especially if you’re near the Potomac River or the National Mall, where drainage is slower during heavy downpours.

What to Wear or Bring

Don’t leave home without an umbrella or rain jacket. Rain pants waterproof will keep you dry if you’re caught outside for extended periods. Layers are smart too—you’ll start around the low 50s this morning and only reach 77°F by afternoon, so a light sweater or windbreaker under your rain gear makes sense. Waterproof shoes are also a good call for puddles around Union Station and downtown sidewalks.

Rainy Day Plans & Dining

This is the perfect day for comfort food and staying cozy indoors. A slow cooker chili or beef stew simmering all day pairs perfectly with rainy weather. If you’re planning dinner, consider making a big pot of soup or a hearty stew in an enameled cast iron Dutch oven. Set up a programmable slow cooker this morning and come home to a warm meal. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Tonight & Thursday Outlook

Showers and thunderstorms remain likely tonight, with lows around 52°F and a 65–70% chance of precipitation. Northwest winds 6–12 mph will help clear the system out. Thursday looks much better—partly sunny with a high near 63°F and only a 40% chance of showers before 2 PM ET. By Thursday night, conditions improve significantly with partly cloudy skies and lows around 47°F.

This weekend brings daily chances of showers and thunderstorms as an upper-level trough moves through Saturday, followed by another cold front Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will creep back into the 70s and low 80s, so enjoy Thursday’s clearer weather while it lasts.
