Washington, DC starts Sunday with a few isolated rain showers before 7 AM ET, then clears out to partly sunny skies and a high near 86°F — a solid day to knock out errands early and save outdoor plans for the afternoon once the wet stuff moves through.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says a cold front is easing southward through the District this morning, and while showers are possible through mid-morning, coverage looks isolated rather than widespread (just a 17% chance). Winds stay light out of the northwest at 6 to 9 mph. Tonight clears out nicely, mostly clear and comfortable with a low around 68°F.

Best Window To Be Outside

After the morning shower risk clears by mid-morning, the rest of today and all of Monday (high near 85°F, mostly sunny, 0% rain) are your best bets for the National Mall, the Tidal Basin, or a run along the Potomac River. If you’re planning to mow, Monday’s dry stretch is the window — this is a good weekend to check the EGO Power+ battery deal before the next round of rain complicates yard work.

Rain And Storm Risk This Week

According to the Area Forecast Discussion from NWS Baltimore/Washington, lingering thunderstorm chances stay mostly south of the District near I-64 in central Virginia today and Monday as the front stalls out. The bigger story is Tuesday: a strong cold front returns with an 86% chance of rain and the potential for severe thunderstorms plus localized flash flooding, a threat forecasters say could linger into Wednesday. Have a way to get warnings and avoid driving through flooded roads if storms fire up.

What To Wear Or Bring

With showers on and off through Tuesday, a packable rain jacket earns its keep in the bag. Monday’s dry, sunny stretch is made for the grill — a portable propane grill makes for an easy patio dinner while the weather holds.

Games And Shows On Tap

Tonight, Beetlejuice (Touring) plays The National Theatre if you want an indoor plan while the last showers clear. Looking ahead, Noah Kahan brings The Great Divide Tour to Nationals Park Wednesday, July 22 — read our full concert weather breakdown given the unsettled pattern possibly stretching into that day, and grab a Noah Kahan t-shirt if you’re heading out. The Mystics host Las Vegas Aces at CareFirst Arena the same night. Friday, July 24, the Nationals take on the Diamondbacks with a Jason Derulo postgame concert at Nationals Park — Get tickets on SeatGeek and pick up Official team gear on Fanatics before first pitch.

Tonight’s Dinner

With rain showers in the pattern, it’s a good night to lean into comfort food — a big pot of beef stew or chili from the programmable slow cooker hits the spot while the front moves through. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Expect Monday to be the pick of the week — dry, sunny, near 85°F. Rain chances climb Monday night (50%) ahead of Tuesday’s more organized storm system (88°F, 86% chance of rain) that carries the District’s best shot at severe weather and flash flooding this week, per the National Weather Service.
