Washington, DC wakes up to a warm, mostly dry Tuesday with a high near 87°F, but that calm won’t last — the National Weather Service says a stalled front will lift north as a warm front tonight, bringing a real flash flood threat to the metro by early Wednesday morning. If you’ve got outdoor plans, front-load them: today is your best shot before things get soggy.

Today’s Setup

Skies stay partly sunny with a light northeast wind at 5 to 8 mph and only a 3% chance of rain through the afternoon, per the NWS forecast. Humidity will build ahead of the front, so expect that muggy, hazy-sun feel by mid-afternoon around the National Mall and the Tidal Basin.

Best Window To Be Outside

Get outside now through this evening. NWS Baltimore/Washington forecasters note the boundary sitting over southern Virginia stays nearly stationary through this morning, keeping DC dry — but showers and thunderstorms push into the area tonight as the front lifts north. Plan any grilling, mowing, or riverside walks along the Potomac for today’s daylight hours rather than after sunset.

Flash Flood Risk Tonight Into Wednesday

This is the headline. NWS forecasters are monitoring the potential for localized urban flooding as slow-moving thunderstorms move through tonight into Wednesday morning, and the Weather Prediction Center has the DC metro under a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall. Tonight’s low sits near 72°F with a 61% chance of showers and storms and a quarter to half inch of rain possible; Wednesday’s high near 88°F comes with a 66-70% chance of more storms and another half inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain. If you’re near a flood-prone street or basement, keep valuables up off the floor — a fireproof document safe is smart insurance for important papers.

What To Wear Or Bring

Light layers work today, but swap in a rain jacket and waterproof shoes for tonight’s commute and Wednesday’s storm chances. Sun is strong before the clouds roll in, so grab the UPF 50+ Sun Hoodie for $5 while it’s on sale. Humidity will be thick both days — pack an anti-frizz hair serum if you’ve got an evening out.

Game Day And Concert Watch

DC United hosts Loudoun United FC at Audi Field Wednesday, Aug. 5, right in the storm window, so check tickets on SeatGeek and watch radar before kickoff. The Washington Nationals welcome the Cincinnati Reds to Nationals Park on Friday, Aug. 7, with better odds of dry weather by then — grab a Washington Nationals jersey and tickets on StubHub. Houndmouth plays The Anthem that same night; look for Houndmouth t-shirt gear before the show. Rock fans can also check out the Totally Tubular Festival on Aug. 7.

Dinner Tonight

With storms rolling in, a warm bowl of pasta or a quick stir-fry fits the mood perfectly. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door — Amazon Fresh groceries makes it easy to skip the wet grocery run.

Next Few Days

Expect daily shower and thunderstorm chances to continue Wednesday night (low near 74°F) and into the weekend as the pattern stays unsettled, per the NWS discussion. Keep an eye on updated forecasts before Friday’s Nationals game and Saturday’s KALEO show at The Anthem.

Upcoming Home Games

Plan around the forecast — grab tickets, gear up, and see kickoff conditions.
