Washington, DC is waking up to a hot Sunday with temperatures climbing to near 90°F this afternoon — and this is just the opening act for a near-record heat wave building through Tuesday. Plan your outdoor time carefully and keep the water flowing.

Today’s Setup

Mostly sunny skies dominate the day, with the National Weather Service noting a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms arriving after 5 PM ET, particularly in areas north of I-66 and US-50. Precipitation chances are only 20%, so most of DC will stay dry. West winds stay light at 3 to 7 mph. Any lingering storm chances clear before 8 PM ET tonight, with lows dropping to around 66°F.

Best Window To Be Outside

Get outside early. Morning runs along the National Mall, paddling on the Potomac, or a round at East Potomac Park Golf Course are all ideal before noon. By mid-afternoon, 90 degrees bites hard.

Heading to Nationals Park for today’s Washington Nationals vs. Baltimore Orioles game? It’s a Kids Novelty Sliding Mitt giveaway day, and the weather cooperates through most of the afternoon. Load up an insulated tumbler 30oz to keep drinks cold, dress the crew in a Washington Nationals jersey and a Washington Nationals fitted cap to handle the sun, and Find tickets on StubHub if you still need seats. Keep an eye on the radar after 5 PM ET — that storm window is slim but real.

Also on today’s docket: West Side Story with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center and The Great Gatsby (Touring) at the National Theatre — both excellent air-conditioned alternatives if the heat wins.

The Heat Builds: Monday Through Tuesday

Monday soars to near 94°F. Tuesday could reach near 96°F — approaching record territory, per the National Weather Service. South winds gusting to 18 mph Monday won’t provide meaningful relief, and Monday night only dips to around 71°F. The Nationals continue their homestand hosting the New York Mets through Wednesday, so tailgaters should plan for brutal afternoon heat. A rolling cooler with wheels loaded with ice is essential for any parking-lot prep.

Tomorrow night, Between the Buried and Me plays the 9:30 Club — a solid indoor escape from the heat. Get tickets on SeatGeek while they last.

What To Wear and Bring

Keep it light and breathable. Swap sneakers for men’s sport sandals and don’t skip the wide-brim hat. Check out the Men’s Golf Shorts deal at just $14.85 — 50% off on Amazon right now, and perfectly timed for this heat wave week.

Beat the Heat in the Kitchen

Nobody wants to stand over a hot stove when it’s 90 degrees outside. Go cold: Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are all no-heat wins for this week. A high-powered blender handles smoothie bowls in minutes and keeps the kitchen cool. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Tuesday near 96°F marks the peak of the heat surge before a strong cold front pushes through on Wednesday, bringing chances for thunderstorms — timing and intensity are still coming into focus, so stay tuned to National Weather Service updates as that front approaches. Noticeably cooler and showery conditions follow Thursday and Friday. Enjoy the sunshine while it’s here.
