Washington, DC hits a scorching 97°F today with a Heat Advisory in effect and a good chance of evening thunderstorms — the kind of day to front-load your plans and get indoors before the sky turns. The National Weather Service says heat index values could climb as high as 107 this afternoon, so anyone headed to the National Mall or out for a run along the Potomac River should shift outdoor time to the early morning.
Today’s Setup
Expect mostly sunny skies through midday with that dangerous heat index building through the afternoon. The Heat Advisory runs from 10 AM until 8 PM ET along the I-95 corridor, which includes DC proper. Storm chances climb after 2 PM ET, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms and a tenth to a quarter inch of rain possible. NWS forecasters in the Area Forecast Discussion note the atmosphere remains primed for storms into Monday, so don’t be surprised if a stray rumble shows up outside that window too.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning is your friend today. If you’re walking Rock Creek Park or the Mall before 10 AM, temperatures are still climbing and the advisory hasn’t kicked in yet. After that, the combination of heat and building instability makes outdoor exertion risky. Tonight brings a much bigger storm threat — an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 8 PM, with some storms capable of producing three-quarters to one inch of rain and a low near 73.
Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk
The bigger story tonight and into Monday is flooding, not fire. The Weather Prediction Center has flagged a Day 1 excessive rainfall threat area that includes the region, and the NWS discussion points to a continued risk of severe storms and flash flooding through Monday before things turn more seasonable by midweek. Given the potential for storm-related power blips, it’s not a bad night to have a backup power source charged — the DARAN 288Wh Power Station is a smart, affordable option if you haven’t got one.
What To Wear Or Bring
Light, breathable clothing and constant hydration are the name of the game before the storms roll in — think men’s sport sandals or a women’s swimsuit if you’re cooling off at a pool. Once the rain arrives tonight, rain pants waterproof gear will keep you dry if you’re caught outside. Heading to tonight’s Washington Nationals vs Pittsburgh Pirates game at Nationals Park? Tailgating should stay dry and brutally hot through first pitch, but keep an eye on the sky after 2 PM ET for that thunderstorm chance. Grab a Washington Nationals jersey or Washington Nationals fitted cap for the game, and if tickets aren’t locked in yet, you can get tickets on SeatGeek or find tickets on StubHub. Fans staying through the weekend can also catch the Nats host the Houston Astros Monday through Wednesday, with Monday’s game (high near 88, 50% storm chance) carrying its own pop-up shower risk.
Music fans should note Louis Tomlinson’s How Did We Get Here? World Tour stop at The Anthem on Tuesday — grab a Louis Tomlinson t-shirt while you’re at it.

Tonight’s Dinner
With heat index values near 107, turning on the oven is the last thing you want to do. A cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are all great no-cook options — a high-powered blender makes quick work of smoothies, and an insulated tumbler 30oz keeps drinks cold through the humidity. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Monday stays warm and unsettled with a high near 88 and another round of scattered storms, some possibly heavy given the ongoing flash flood risk. The NWS expects more seasonable conditions to return by mid-to-late week, a welcome break after this stretch of heat and storms.
