Washington, DC is baking toward a near-95°F high on Sunday, June 14, with a severe thunderstorm threat developing after 5 PM ET — get your outdoor plans done early and have an inside backup ready for this evening.

Today’s Setup

The nation’s capital is dealing with a textbook summer heat-and-humidity setup. Southerly winds are pumping in deep moisture — the National Weather Service notes dewpoints near 70°F and precipitable water values near 2 inches, making it feel genuinely oppressive across Capitol Hill and the National Mall. Morning and midday bring partly sunny skies, with temperatures climbing fast toward that near-95°F afternoon peak.

The bigger story is what happens after 5 PM ET. NWS forecasters are flagging a significant severe thunderstorm threat, fueled by around 1,000–2,000 J/kg of atmospheric instability and 40–50 knots of effective bulk shear. That combination can produce supercells capable of damaging winds, large hail, and heavy downpours. Winds tonight could gust to 18 mph, with a quarter to half inch of rain possible overnight.

Best Window To Be Outside

Your clear outdoor window runs through roughly 4 PM ET. Head to Rock Creek Park or the Tidal Basin in the morning before the full heat sets in. Pack an insulated tumbler 30oz to stay hydrated — 95°F with dewpoints near 70°F is legitimately dangerous — and wear men’s sport sandals to keep your feet from cooking on the pavement.

After 4 PM, storms can fire quickly. The heaviest activity is expected between 8 and 10 PM ET, so wrap up any plans on the H Street Corridor or Georgetown waterfront well before dark.

Nats Gameday Alert

The Washington Nationals host the Seattle Mariners today at Nationals Park, and the afternoon heat alone makes this a tough one. Storms could also threaten the game — check for delay notifications before heading to the ballpark. Bring a Washington Nationals fitted cap for sun protection and wear your Washington Nationals jersey with pride. Need last-minute seats? Find tickets on StubHub.

Events This Week

Monday is a stunning rebound — sunny, high near 79°F, northwest winds around 15 mph. Perfect for assembling that patio furniture set you’ve been putting off, or catching the Nationals host the Kansas City Royals (games Monday through Wednesday at Nationals Park).

On Wednesday, June 17, CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso bring their Free Spirits World Tour to The Anthem. Indoor venue, zero weather worries. Rep the show with a CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso hat or CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso t-shirt, or Get tickets on SeatGeek.

With Father’s Day next Sunday, Monday’s gorgeous weather is prime time to fire up the backyard — a Father’s Day grilling set tops the wish list this week.

Too Hot To Cook Tonight?

Skip the stove entirely. Cold Thai noodle salad, smoothie bowls, or a build-your-own wrap bar are the move when it’s 95°F outside. A high-powered blender handles smoothie bowls in seconds; keep your drinks cold all day in an insulated tumbler 30oz. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered to your door.
