Washington, DC is in for a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a high near 88°F — enjoy every minute of it, because a significant severe weather threat is building for Monday.

Today’s Setup

Any isolated showers will wrap up before 8 AM ET, leaving behind a mostly sunny afternoon with comfortable northwest winds of 3 to 14 mph and gusts up to 18 mph. For late June in DC, that’s about as good as it gets — low humidity, blue skies, and easy breezes along the Potomac. Tonight stays partly cloudy with a low around 68°F, making for a pleasant evening across the city.

Best Window To Be Outside

All of Sunday afternoon is yours. Mow the lawn, fire up the grill, bike the National Mall, or take the kids to Rock Creek Park — this window is wide open. If you’re catching a show tonight, you’re in great shape: Dystinct plays Echostage and Comedy Bang! Bang! hits the Warner Theatre. Get tickets on SeatGeek before they sell out. The evening air should be comfortable heading in and out of any venue.

Monday Severe Weather Threat

Monday is a different story. The National Weather Service warns of a significant severe weather event as a low-pressure system tracks northeast from the Ohio River Valley. Scattered showers arrive between 8 and 11 AM ET, then widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely through the afternoon and into the evening — 90% chance of precipitation. Temperatures will surge near 95°F before falling back to around 87°F as storms move through. South winds of 5 to 18 mph with gusts to 24 mph add to the threat.

Damaging wind gusts are the primary hazard, and isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out across the region. The National Weather Service also notes that atmospheric moisture (precipitable water near 2 inches) will fuel locally heavy rainfall, and the Weather Prediction Center has the DC metro in a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall — scattered flash flooding is possible within the strongest cells. The peak severe window looks like mid-to-late afternoon through late evening Monday.

Nationals Park on Monday — Weather Alert

The Washington Nationals host the Philadelphia Phillies at Nationals Park on Monday, June 22, and that game falls squarely in the storm window. Monitor conditions closely before heading out to Southeast DC. Bring a packable rain jacket and plan for possible delays. Show your Nats pride with a Washington Nationals jersey or Washington Nationals fitted cap — you’ll need them either way.

What To Wear or Bring

For Sunday: light layers and sunscreen are all you need. Save the rain gear for Monday. For Monday’s commute or any outdoor plan, pack that rain jacket and leave extra buffer time for traffic — storms like these make the Beltway miserable.

Rainy Day Dinner Idea

With Monday’s storms on the way, Sunday is the perfect day to set up a programmable slow cooker loaded with chili, beef stew, or a hearty soup — start it in the morning and dinner is ready when the thunder rolls. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works beautifully on the stovetop if you prefer a more hands-on simmer. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

The National Weather Service notes the cold front may stall near the area, keeping some shower and storm chances alive into midweek before a brief dry spell sets in. Daily thunderstorm chances are expected to return by the end of the week. Stay updated with the Washington, DC weather forecast and check outdoor gear deals before the next stormy stretch arrives.
