Washington, DC is in for a mostly cloudy Saturday with a high near 87°F, and the National Weather Service says to get outdoor plans wrapped up by early afternoon — showers and strong thunderstorms are likely to move in after 2 PM and could linger into the evening.

Today’s Setup

A weak cold front sliding through the area will fire up showers and a few strong to severe thunderstorms roughly between 2 PM and 8 PM, according to the Area Forecast Discussion from the NWS Baltimore/Washington office. Winds stay light out of the northwest at 2 to 7 mph ahead of the front, and the chance of precipitation sits at 50% today, climbing to 52% tonight as storms linger before midnight. Overnight lows settle near 69°F.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning through early afternoon — roughly before 2 PM — is your clearest stretch today for a walk along the Mall, a paddle on the Potomac, or an early tee time. If you’re fishing the river, get your line in before lunch and pack the tackle box; a Plano Double-Sided Tackle Box keeps gear organized for a quick morning trip. Sunday is the better all-day pick, with partly sunny skies, a high near 83°F, and just a 1% chance of rain — ideal for golf, with light east winds at 5 to 9 mph.

Storm And Flash Flood Risk

The Storm Prediction Center has placed our area, along and south of I-70, in a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with damaging winds the main concern. The Weather Prediction Center has the Chesapeake Bay region, including DC, in a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall, with a Slight Risk further west in Maryland — new rainfall of a quarter to half inch is possible tonight. If storms roll through while you’re outside, get indoors and avoid flooded roadways.

Nationals Gameday And Tailgating

The Washington Nationals host the New York Yankees at Nationals Park both today and Sunday. Today’s game carries real storm risk during that 2-8 PM window, so tailgaters should watch the sky and have a backup plan; Sunday’s matchup looks far more pleasant under partly sunny skies. Grab a Washington Nationals jersey or Washington Nationals fitted cap before first pitch, and you can Get tickets on SeatGeek for either game. Across town, American Football plays 9:30 Club Saturday night into Sunday — check out our coverage of the band’s tour and grab an American Football t-shirt if you’re headed out.

What To Grill Tonight

With storms holding off until afternoon, it’s a solid morning for the grill — burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob all work well before the weather turns. An instant-read meat thermometer and a grill brush and scraper set make quick work of it. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Sunday looks like the pick of the weekend with sunshine and a high near 83°F. The NWS discussion flags heat and humidity building back in by Wednesday and lasting through next Saturday, so enjoy the milder stretch while it lasts. If storms today knock out power, a DARAN 288Wh Power Station is worth having on hand, and you can browse more outdoor gear deals while you’re at it.
