Washington, DC weather today is mostly sunny with a high near 86°F and a light east wind of 3 to 7 mph — a calm, comfortable day that’s about to give way to a much rowdier Tuesday. The National Weather Service in Sterling says today’s sunshine is courtesy of high pressure parked over the northern Mid-Atlantic, which is also keeping temperatures a touch below normal for late July. Get outside now, because the pattern flips fast.

Today’s Setup

With the ridge overhead, convection stays suppressed south of the District through the afternoon, though forecasters note a “notable cumulus field” could build over the region. As the high slides off tonight, a front stalled near the Virginia/North Carolina border starts lifting north, and moisture increases from south to north overnight. Expect a low around 71°F with a 54% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 2 and 5 AM.

Rain And Storm Risk Ramps Up Tuesday

Tuesday is the day to watch closely. The warm front lifts north of the District in the morning, ushering in a warm, humid airmass just as a seasonably strong trough approaches from the west with 30 to 40 knots of wind shear — a textbook setup for strong to severe thunderstorms. The NWS expects the strongest storms during the typical afternoon-and-evening window, with a high near 90°F, an 80% chance of rain, south wind 3 to 12 mph, and gusts as high as 21 mph. Secure patio furniture and anything loose on decks or balconies before storms roll through.

Best Window To Be Outside

Today, before storms return, is your window for the National Mall, Rock Creek Park trails, or a paddle on the Potomac River. If you’re floating this week, the 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler is a solid grab for a lazy afternoon before Tuesday’s storms arrive. Anglers working the river should get out early too — Strike King Crankbaits from $6 at Bass Pro Shops are worth checking out before conditions turn choppy.

What To Wear Or Bring

Light layers and sunscreen for today’s sunshine, but keep a rain jacket handy for tonight’s overnight showers. A citronella candle set can help make the muggiest evening hours on the patio more bearable before the bigger storms move in Tuesday.

Game Day, Concert & Event Watch

CareFirst Arena hosts the Mystics vs. Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday, July 22, while Nationals Park welcomes the Noah Kahan concert that same night — get tickets on SeatGeek or find tickets on StubHub, and grab a Noah Kahan t-shirt or Noah Kahan hoodie for the show. Later in the week, the Nationals host the Diamondbacks with a Jason Derulo postgame concert on July 24, and D.C. United takes on Toronto FC at Audi Field on July 25. Official team gear on Fanatics covers you for any of these outings.

Dinner Tonight

With storms in the overnight forecast, a warm bowl of pasta or a quick stir-fry is an easy, cozy call for tonight. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door — Amazon Fresh groceries makes it simple to skip a store run before the rain starts.

Next Few Days

The NWS says thunderstorm risk lingers into Wednesday before high pressure builds back in, bringing cooler-than-average temperatures and mainly dry conditions to close out the week — good news for weekend plans around town.
