Washington, DC is heating up to near 91°F today under partly sunny skies before a chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives after 3 PM, according to the National Weather Service. If you’ve got outdoor plans on the National Mall or along the Potomac River, get them done before mid-afternoon, because the atmosphere is loading up for a run of unsettled weather through the weekend.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service’s Baltimore/Washington office says a few disturbances will roll through the region today, tapping rich low-level moisture and enough wind shear to spark heavy showers and a few strong to severe thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has our entire region, including DC, in a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms today into tonight, with damaging wind gusts and torrential downpours possible in the strongest cells. West winds stay light around 7 mph, so it’ll feel muggy well before any storms fire.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning through early afternoon is your best bet — think a run on the Mount Vernon Trail or a walk around the Tidal Basin before 3 PM. Tonight cools only to around 72°F with another round of storms possible before midnight. Saturday trends wetter and slightly cooler, topping near 86°F, with showers and thunderstorms likely between 2 and 3 PM and a 70% chance of rain overall — plan any Saturday outdoor time for the morning.
Rain, Wind, Or Flood Risk
While the heaviest flash-flood threat is aimed at western Maryland and the Central Appalachians, the Weather Prediction Center’s Slight Risk for excessive rainfall sits just upstream of the DC metro, and any training storms could still drop a quick tenth to a quarter inch of rain locally. Keep an eye on the sky if you’re near Rock Creek Park or low-lying spots along the Potomac. With possible power blips from gusty storms, a DARAN 288Wh Power Station is a smart, affordable backup to keep on hand.
What To Wear Or Bring
Heat and humidity mean light, breathable layers — men’s sport sandals or quick dry swim trunks if you’re near the water — plus sunscreen for the sunny morning hours.
Tonight’s Games And Shows
The Washington Nationals host the New York Yankees at Nationals Park today, with the pregame tailgate likely dry but the later innings at risk for a passing storm — bring ponchos just in case, and grab a Washington Nationals jersey or Washington Nationals fitted cap before first pitch. Series play continues Saturday and Sunday. Downtown, Jack White plays The Anthem tonight — snag tickets on SeatGeek and pair the night with a Jack White t-shirt. Saturday night, don’t miss the American Football concert at 9:30 Club, with tickets on StubHub.
Dinner Tonight
With the mugginess building, skip the stove — a cold Thai noodle salad or a smoothie bowl bar hits the spot. A high-powered blender and an insulated tumbler 30oz make quick work of it. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered before the storms roll in.
Next Few Days
After Saturday’s likely storms, the NWS says warming temperatures and minimal rain chances take over next week — a much drier, calmer stretch is on the way.
