Tornado Outbreak Spreads to New York and Minnesota; Wind Damage Reports Top 360 Across Four States

Five confirmed tornadoes touched down across Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, and New York during the latest phase of a prolonged severe weather outbreak, the Storm Prediction Center reported — marking the event’s first confirmed landings in the Upper Midwest and Northeast after days of concentrated activity across the central and southern United States.

Post-event storm surveys confirmed tornado landings near Dupont, Louisiana; 1 SW Whites Crossing, Mississippi; 3 W Laporte, Minnesota; Rock Stream, New York; and 3 WSW Cortland, New York. The National Weather Service maintains five active tornado alerts across the same four-state region.

Thursday’s reporting had placed the cumulative outbreak total at 23 confirmed tornadoes across Alabama, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Wisconsin. Friday’s confirmations in Minnesota and New York represent a northeastern and northward shift in the event’s footprint, with no prior tornado touchdowns from this outbreak recorded in either state during earlier phases.

The full toll extends well beyond tornado impacts. The Storm Prediction Center logged 364 damaging wind reports and 36 large hail reports in the same 48-hour window — figures that underscore the system’s geographic breadth across multiple states and population centers. Wind damage reports numbering in the hundreds are expected to shape final damage assessments long after tornado field surveys are complete.

New York recorded two confirmed tornadoes at geographically separate locations — near Rock Stream and 3 WSW Cortland — indicating the storm tracked across a substantial corridor of the state’s interior. Residents in western and central New York, including those monitoring Rochester weather, should consult the National Weather Service for residual hazards as field surveys continue and active alerts resolve.

Minnesota recorded its first confirmed tornado from this event near Laporte. Residents across the Twin Cities metro and the broader Upper Midwest, including those following Minneapolis weather, should remain attentive to National Weather Service advisories as the overall system continues to be assessed.

The Storm Prediction Center has not yet issued a final cumulative tornado count for the full outbreak cycle. Anyone in Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, or New York currently under an active National Weather Service tornado alert should move immediately to the interior of the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
