The confirmed tornado count from this week’s severe weather outbreak climbed to 22 over the past 48 hours, the Storm Prediction Center said, as damage-survey teams extended their findings into New York for the first time since the outbreak began.
Confirmed tornadoes were logged in Arizona, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. That marks a shift from the prior day’s tally of 16 confirmed tornadoes across nine states — Arizona, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and West Virginia — which did not include New York. Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin dropped out of the latest confirmed count as survey attention shifted eastward, while the Northeast absorbed new damage.
Among the newly confirmed twisters, survey teams documented a tornado 5 miles north-northwest of Chenango Forks, New York, and another 2 miles west-southwest of South Canaan, Pennsylvania. New Jersey recorded additional confirmed damage 1 mile west of Stanhope and 1 mile north of Troy Hills, both areas hit on back-to-back days. In Ohio, a tornado was confirmed 3 miles west-southwest of Amelia.
The Storm Prediction Center also tallied 297 damaging wind reports and eight large hail reports over the same 48-hour window, a volume that far exceeds the tornado count and points to a broad swath of severe thunderstorm damage beyond the confirmed twisters. The National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center characterize the 22 tornadoes, along with the wind and hail reports, as confirmed post-event findings — the severe weather that produced them has largely pushed through the affected areas, and survey crews are now focused on assessing structural and tree damage rather than tracking an active threat.
The rising count reflects how confirmed tornado totals typically climb in the days after a multi-state outbreak, as National Weather Service survey teams complete ground assessments in hard-hit communities. Areas including Columbus weather and Pittsburgh weather fall within the broader corridor where confirmed damage has been logged over the past two days, though the confirmed tornado sites themselves were concentrated in smaller communities across New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Residents in the affected states are advised to steer clear of downed power lines and unstable trees while cleanup continues, and to monitor local National Weather Service offices for any follow-up advisories tied to storm debris or flooding from the same system.
