Tampa Bay is kicking off Wednesday under wall-to-wall sunshine with a high near 94°F — but the heat index could climb as high as 104°F, so treat this like the serious heat day it is and plan your outdoor time early.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says a pocket of drier air is actually keeping storm chances very low today — just 7% — which is a bit unusual for mid-June here. South-southwest winds of 7 to 12 mph with gusts to 18 mph will provide minimal relief. Dew points are sitting in the mid to upper 70s, so the air feels thick and heavy the moment you step outside. Most of the Tampa Bay area is expected to stay rain-free through the afternoon.

Best Window To Be Outside

Get outdoors before 10 AM ET. Whether you’re heading to Clearwater Beach, Fort De Soto Park, or the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa, early morning is your sweet spot. By midday the heat index will be in the triple digits. For the kids, a kiddie splash pad in the backyard beats standing in the sun at a crowded park — and keeps everyone happy without fighting beach traffic.

Heat and Fire Safety Check

With elevated winds and intense heat this week, it’s a good time to run a quick home safety check. Make sure you have a working smoke detector combo pack and a fire extinguisher home within easy reach — the kitchen especially. These are small investments that matter when conditions get intense. The NWS notes heat index values may approach or exceed Heat Advisory criteria on Thursday and Friday as deep tropical moisture surges back into the region.

Thursday Into the Weekend

Thursday stays hot at 94°F with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms (20%) mainly between 11 AM and 4 PM ET over interior areas — coastal spots may stay mostly dry but don’t count on it. A tighter pressure gradient will bring breezy onshore flow Thursday, raising rip current risk at Gulf beaches including Clearwater and Honeymoon Island. If a beach day is in your plans, today is the better bet. Check the Tampa Bay weather forecast Thursday morning before you head out.

This Weekend’s Events

Tropicana Field’s dome is the best air conditioning in St. Pete right now — the Tampa Bay Rays host the Washington Nationals on Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20. Perfect escape from the heat. Grab a Tampa Bay Rays jersey and snag tickets on SeatGeek for a cool evening at the Trop.

Also on June 19, the Josh Groban with special guest Jennifer Hudson concert hits Benchmark International Arena — an indoor show, great timing with this heat wave. Pick up a Josh Groban hat or Josh Groban t-shirt before you go. Check outdoor gear deals if you need to stock up on summer essentials before the weekend.

Too Hot to Cook

Skip the oven tonight. Blend up smoothie bowls with frozen fruit, or throw together a cold Thai noodle salad — a high-powered blender gets it done in under a minute. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered straight to your door.

Next Few Days

Thursday: 94°F, isolated afternoon storms (20%), rip current risk at Gulf beaches. Friday through the weekend: tropical moisture continues building, rain coverage increases — peak Florida summer is fully here. Stay cool out there, Tampa Bay.

Upcoming Home Games

Plan around the forecast — grab tickets, gear up, and see kickoff conditions.
