Tampa is starting Tuesday under sunny skies, but the classic Bay Area summer setup is already in motion — a high near 93°F, a heat index touching 100°F, and scattered thunderstorms rolling in after 2 PM ET. Get your outdoor plans wrapped up before noon if you can.

Today’s Setup

A surface high over the western Atlantic is driving east to southeast flow across the Florida Peninsula, pushing the west coast sea breeze boundary directly over Tampa Bay, according to the National Weather Service. That boundary is what fires the afternoon storms each day this week. Today’s stronger cells are capable of producing wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph and small hail, so don’t linger at Clearwater Beach or on the water once clouds start stacking.

Best Window To Be Outside

Before 1 PM ET is your sweet spot. Morning walks along the Riverwalk, a paddleboard session at Fort De Soto, or a quick round at a local course are all manageable — hot, but manageable. Keep an insulated tumbler 30oz with you; the heat index hits triple digits fast out here. Most storm activity should wind down before 10 PM ET, leaving a mostly clear overnight with a low around 73°F.

Heat and Storm Risk

Severe to extreme drought conditions are gripping most of the region, and two hazards are running in parallel: heat stress and lightning. Tampa Bay is the lightning capital of the US — when thunder roars, go indoors immediately. The dry ground won’t absorb much rain even when storms do fire, so don’t expect flooding, but respect the electrical risk. If your lawn is toast from drought, picking up some drought resistant seed mix now will position you well once rainfall recovers.

Rays Tonight — Zero Weather Worries

The Tampa Bay Rays host the Baltimore Orioles at Tropicana Field tonight and again Wednesday — both indoor games, so those afternoon storms are completely irrelevant. Head to St. Pete worry-free. Deck out in a Tampa Bay Rays jersey or Tampa Bay Rays fitted cap before you go, and if you still need seats, Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek.

Upcoming: Dave Matthews Band on May 26

Dave Matthews Band plays the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre at the FL State Fairgrounds on May 26 — an outdoor venue worth planning around. The National Weather Service expects slightly reduced storm coverage by the weekend as an upper-level ridge builds, though afternoon storm chances linger. We’ll have a full show-day breakdown closer to the date. Grab a Dave Matthews Band t-shirt or Dave Matthews Band hat ahead of time, and lock in your tickets on SeatGeek now while you can.

Beat the Heat: Tonight’s Dinner

Skip the stove entirely. Cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are perfect for a 93-degree evening — a high-powered blender handles all three and keeps the kitchen cool. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Wednesday offers a mild break — still near 92°F but only a 20% storm chance, with isolated cells possible after 3 PM ET. The broader pattern stays locked in through the weekend with lower to mid 90s and daily afternoon thunderstorm windows. Check the Tampa weather forecast each morning for the latest, and browse outdoor gear deals if you’re kitting up for a long, hot summer.
