Tampa hits a high near 90°F today with scattered showers and thunderstorms and a heat index climbing to 100, so plan your outdoor time before early afternoon and keep storm safety in mind if you’re headed to the beach.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service Tampa Bay office says deep tropical moisture and a stalled frontal boundary near the Florida Panhandle will keep the atmosphere primed through the weekend. Expect scattered storms before 2 PM ET, another round between 2-4 PM ET, then more scattered activity into the evening. Winds stay light out of the west-southwest at 3 to 10 mph, and rainfall totals of a tenth to a quarter inch are likely with any one cell. Tonight cools to near 77°F with a 50% chance of more showers and up to a half inch of rain possible.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning is your best bet — from sunrise until roughly 1 PM ET — before the first wave of storms fires up. If you’re mowing the lawn in South Tampa, walking Bayshore Boulevard, or getting a paddleboard session in off St. Pete Beach, get it done early. By mid-afternoon, radar-watching becomes part of the plan, which is normal for a Gulf Coast summer.
Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk
The heat index near 100°F is the top hazard today — hydrate often and take shade breaks. The NWS has also issued a Flood Watch for Levy, Citrus, and Hernando counties from noon today through 8 PM Monday, with a slight risk of excessive rainfall centered on the Nature Coast; Tampa Bay itself carries a marginal flood risk, but heavy downpours are still possible. Separately, a high risk of dangerous rip currents is posted for area beaches, including Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach, through the weekend — stay close to shore if you swim.
What To Wear Or Bring
Light, breathable layers and no show socks bamboo work well for humid, on-again-off-again rain. Keep water cold with an insulated tumbler 30oz, and if pets are joining the fun, a dog splash pad helps them beat the heat in the yard between storms.
Gameday & Weekend Events
The Tampa Bay Rays host the Chicago White Sox at Tropicana Field tonight and Sunday — the dome means rain won’t touch the action, so grab a Tampa Bay Rays jersey or Tampa Bay Rays fitted cap and settle in. Outdoors, TOTO, Christopher Cross, and The Romantics play MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre tonight, so watch the radar before you head out — Find tickets on StubHub. Dude Perfect brings the Squad Games Tour to Benchmark International Arena tonight too; that one’s indoors, so Get tickets on SeatGeek and pick up a Dude Perfect t-shirt for the kids.
Tonight’s Meal Idea
With this heat, skip the stove — a cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are easy wins. A high-powered blender makes quick work of smoothies, and that insulated tumbler 30oz keeps drinks cold on the patio. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Sunday looks wetter, with a 70% rain chance and storms possible from morning through late afternoon as the best dynamics move overhead — carry the umbrella. The southwest flow and flood watch continue into Monday, so keep an eye on forecasts if you’re near the Nature Coast counties.
