Tampa Bay is opening the first official day of astronomical summer with a scorching high near 95°F and a heat index that could top 105°F by early afternoon — respect the heat or stay inside.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says a surface ridge is locked over the region, pushing mostly sunny skies and light southwest winds at 1 to 9 mph across the Bay. Rain chances are just 13% today — and any isolated showers will develop well inland during the afternoon, leaving coastal spots like Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, and the downtown St. Pete waterfront mostly dry all day.

Best Window To Be Outside

Before 10 AM ET is your window. Running the Tampa Riverwalk, fishing off the Gandy Bridge, or working in the yard all need to happen early. Once 11 AM hits, heat index values will race toward 105°F — potentially dangerous with prolonged sun exposure. Tonight only drops to around 78°F with a heat index still near 102°F, so even sunset strolls will feel muggy.

Heat and Fire Risk

Elevated heat and below-normal rain chances this week mean fire risk is heightened across the Tampa Bay area. Smart preparation now: keep a fire extinguisher home accessible in the kitchen and garage, add a fire blanket kitchen near the stovetop, and store your critical documents in a fireproof document safe. If you live in a multi-level home, a fire escape ladder 2 story is worth having staged. Should any smoke events develop nearby, N95 respirator mask smoke will protect your lungs. And since we’re in hurricane country, a go bag emergency evacuation kit should always be ready to grab.

Rays at Tropicana Field All Week

The best seat in Tampa on a 95°F day is inside air-conditioned Tropicana Field. The Tampa Bay Rays host the Washington Nationals today (June 21), then the Kansas City Royals come to town for three straight games June 22–24. Deck out in a Tampa Bay Rays jersey and Find tickets on StubHub before the weekend crowd beats you to it.

Concerts Ahead: Hilary Duff and Ye

Hilary Duff: the lucky me tour plays the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre at the FL State Fairgrounds on Tuesday, June 23 — an outdoor venue, so expect lingering heat at showtime. Ye Live in Tampa follows at Raymond James Stadium on June 26, another outdoor event deep in the heat stretch. Grab a Ye hoodie for when the Bay breeze eventually rolls in, and Get tickets on SeatGeek now.

For a lazy cool-down at home, this 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler for just $24 is a summer steal.

Skip the Stove Tonight

Too hot to cook — go with cold Thai noodle salad, smoothie bowls, or a build-your-own wrap bar. A high-powered blender handles icy drinks and smoothie bowls fast. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

No relief in sight: the National Weather Service forecasts 96°F Monday (heat index to 106°F) and 97°F Tuesday. Overnight lows Tuesday and Wednesday mornings may flirt with record high minimums. Keep an eye on the Tampa Bay weather forecast and grab any outdoor gear you need before the week really heats up.
