Tampa Bay is kicking off Thursday with brilliant sunshine and a high near 88°F — one of the cleanest spring days we’ve seen in a stretch, but with one important caveat you shouldn’t overlook.
Today’s Setup
A drier air mass has settled over the region after a mid-level trough pushed away a stalled frontal boundary, according to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin office. Light north-northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph, virtually zero rain chance (just 1%), and wall-to-wall sun make this a standout day. Clearwater Beach, Fort De Soto Park, Weedon Island Preserve, and the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa are all going to be gorgeous this afternoon.
Best Window To Be Outside
The whole day is workable, but mornings are the sweet spot before the heat fully builds. Golfers, this is your window — check out our guide to the best golf balls for high handicappers if your game could use a boost. Paddlers will find calm Bay and Gulf conditions through mid-afternoon.
Rain, Wind, and Fire Risk
Here’s the catch: the National Weather Service has flagged severe to extreme drought conditions across most of the Tampa Bay area. With winds picking up slightly this afternoon and essentially no rain in sight today, fire danger is real. Outdoor burning should be completely off the table. Every home should have a fire extinguisher home accessible and in working condition — and an N95 respirator mask smoke is smart to keep on hand if any smoke drifts in from nearby burns. Don’t wait until you smell smoke to think about this stuff.
Events This Weekend — Rays, Journey, and Pitbull
The Tampa Bay Rays host the Miami Marlins at Tropicana Field on Friday (May 15), Saturday (May 16), and Sunday (May 17). The Trop is fully air-conditioned, so the heat is zero factor — just bring your Tampa Bay Rays jersey and cheer loud. Get tickets on SeatGeek if you still need a seat.
Friday night, Journey brings the Final Frontier Tour to Benchmark International Arena on May 15 — a great indoor show to kick off the weekend. Grab a Journey t-shirt to rep the night. Find tickets on StubHub if you haven’t locked them down yet. Evening temps will be comfortable in the low 70s.
Saturday night, Pitbull with Lil Jon hits the outdoor MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre at the FL State Fairgrounds (May 16). Saturday carries a slight 20% storm chance in the afternoon; it should clear before showtime, but keep tabs on the forecast. A bungee cord assortment to batten down your tailgate setup is always smart at an outdoor amphitheater.
Dinner Tonight
A light pasta or quick stir-fry is perfect for a warm Thursday evening — minimal kitchen heat, fast cleanup, and easy to customize with whatever’s fresh. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered to your door before dinnertime.
Next Few Days
- Friday: Near 92°F, sunny, minimal rain chance (4%)
- Saturday: Near 93°F, mostly sunny with a slight 20% afternoon storm chance — sea breeze will push pop-ups inland toward I-75
- Sunday and beyond: Heat holds in the low 90s; southeast flow gradually builds moisture, pushing rain chances back toward the coast and interior through early next week
The drought isn’t going anywhere fast — every dry, windy day adds to the fire risk until we get meaningful rain. Stay current with the full Tampa Bay weather forecast as the pattern evolves this weekend.
