Tampa Bay wakes up to a classic late-summer setup today: sunny skies, a high near 94°F, and heat index values climbing as high as 104, with scattered showers and thunderstorms arriving after 2 PM ET. If you’ve got errands, a boat trip, or a round of golf planned, the National Weather Service in Ruskin says to get it done before early afternoon.

Today’s Setup

Southeast wind around 6 mph is feeding the Tampa Bay area’s typical summer sea breeze pattern. According to the Area Forecast Discussion, storms will fire over the interior this afternoon and build toward the I-75 corridor during the late afternoon and evening as the sea breeze collides inland. Temperatures actually fall from near 94° to around 88° once the storms roll through. Rainfall should stay light, generally a tenth to a quarter of an inch, with another round of storms possible before 10 PM tonight along Sunday Night’s 40% chance of rain.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning through early afternoon is your window — think Bayshore Boulevard, Davis Islands, or the beaches from Clearwater to St. Pete. Once you get past roughly 2 PM, lightning risk climbs fast, and Tampa Bay’s reputation as the lightning capital of the U.S. is well earned.

Heat And Storm Risk

The Storm Prediction Center has no severe weather outlook out for the area today, and this system stays a routine summer pattern rather than anything organized. The bigger concern is heat: with heat index values up to 104°, drink water often and take breaks in the shade if you’re out midday.

What To Wear Or Bring

For anyone fishing the flats or the pass this morning, a fishing sun shirt UPF 50 will help with the sun before the storms build. St. Pete anglers can also check out the UPF 50+ Sun Hoodie deal, and boaters heading out on the bay should grab the West Marine ski vest deal while it’s just $15. Teeing off early? Pack a golf cooler bag insulated to stay ahead of the heat.

Big Weekend Ahead

Looking toward Saturday, August 15, Tropicana Field hosts the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Baltimore Orioles with a Jordan Davis postgame concert — grab tickets on SeatGeek and rep the team with official team gear on Fanatics. Same night, Mötley Crüe brings The Return of the Carnival of Sins to MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre — find tickets on StubHub and pick up a Mötley Crüe t-shirt for the show. Benchmark International Arena also hosts Monster Jam Freestyle Mania that evening.

Dinner Tonight

With sunshine dominating the day before the evening storms, it’s a good night to fire up the grill for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob. An instant-read meat thermometer keeps everything cooked right, and a grill brush and scraper set makes cleanup painless. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Monday stays hot with a high near 94° and heat index near 104, but rain chances drop sharply to just 6% as drier air moves in, especially around the Tampa Bay and I-4 corridor. Tuesday through Friday, the AFD calls for a drier stretch overall, with only 10-20% rain coverage each day and highs holding in the low to mid 90s — a welcome break from the storm clockwork before the pattern likely returns.

Upcoming Home Games

Plan around the forecast — grab tickets, gear up, and see kickoff conditions.
