Tampa–St. Petersburg is in for a hot, mostly sunny Friday with a high near 91°F and a heat index as high as 98°F. If you’re spending time outside today, plan around the heat and keep a Yeti rambler water bottle close.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service has an isolated storm window from 11 AM to 2 PM ET, with just a 20% chance of precipitation. Outside that window, expect mostly sunny skies and light WNW winds at 1 to 8 mph. NWS forecasters in Tampa Bay note the current pattern sends convection onshore near the west coast during late night and morning hours, then pushes it inland by late afternoon — so Clearwater Beach and the St. Pete waterfront should stay clear for most of the day.
Best Window To Be Outside
Before 10 AM or after 3 PM ET are your best windows for outdoor time. Get beach trips, yard work, or tee times done early. If you’re in the market for golf gear, the adidas Women’s Golf Shoes deal at just $29 is worth a look. If thunder rolls during that midday window, get inside immediately — Tampa is the lightning capital of the U.S.
Rain and Heat Risk
The heat index near 98°F is today’s main hazard, not severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has no outlook for the Bay area, and the Weather Prediction Center’s Slight Risk for excessive rainfall is focused on Alabama and Georgia — well east of us. Stay hydrated and take A/C breaks. An insulated tumbler 30oz will keep cold drinks cold for hours in this heat.
Weekend Events and Games
Saturday’s storm chance climbs to 40%, which matters for outdoor plans. Two big shows hit MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre at the FL State Fairgrounds this weekend: Kid Rock’s Freedom 250 Tour on Saturday, May 30 and the Southern Hospitality Tour with The Black Crowes and Whiskey Myers on Sunday, May 31 — both outdoor venues. Keep an eye on the radar, bring a poncho, and grab a Kid Rock t-shirt for the show. Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub. With storms in the mix, it’s also a solid weekend to have backup power — Prime members can grab a DARAN 288Wh Power Station for just $90.
Shinedown’s Dance, Kid, Dance Act II plays Benchmark International Arena on Saturday, May 30 — an indoor venue, so no weather worries. A Shinedown t-shirt is the right fit for that one.
The Tampa Bay Rays host the Los Angeles Angels at Tropicana Field this Friday through Sunday — all indoors, rain or shine. Rep the home team with a Tampa Bay Rays jersey or Tampa Bay Rays fitted cap.
Eat Cool Tonight
Too hot to cook — tonight calls for cold Thai noodle salad, build-your-own wraps, or smoothie bowls. A high-powered blender handles the smoothie work in seconds. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Scattered storms continue through the weekend and into early next week, with highs near 90°F and overnight lows around 78°F. The National Weather Service expects storm timing near the coast during late night and morning hours, shifting inland by late afternoon each day. A more typical east-to-southeast flow — and afternoon storm timing closer to the coast — should return in the second half of next week. Keep outdoor plans flexible through at least Wednesday.
