Tampa Bay is running hot today, with a high near 95°F, heat index values as high as 104, and just a 20% chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms rolling through between 11 AM and 4 PM ET — get outdoor plans done early or push them to the evening.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service office in Ruskin says a plume of Saharan dust is parked over the Gulf Coast today, which is actually working in our favor: it’s keeping most shower activity over on Florida’s east coast while Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater stay mostly sunny. Winds stay light out of the southwest at 1 to 8 mph, so any storms near the bay should stay isolated and quick-moving rather than widespread.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning is your friend — hit the beach, walk the Pinellas Trail, or get to Al Lopez Park before 11 AM while storm chances are lowest. If you’re out midday, keep an eye on the sky between 11 AM and 4 PM. Tonight only cools to around 79°F under partly cloudy skies with a light west-northwest breeze, so evening walks along Bayshore Boulevard are a solid bet.
Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk
Heat is the real story this week, not rain. The Storm Prediction Center has no severe weather outlook for our area, and the Weather Prediction Center’s excessive rainfall risk is focused on Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, not Tampa Bay. The NWS forecast discussion notes Saharan dust will keep strengthening through Tuesday into Thursday, cutting off our usual afternoon storms and pushing highs into the upper 90s with heat index values near 105. Rain chances don’t meaningfully return until Friday and Saturday.
What To Wear Or Bring
Light, breathable clothing and sunscreen are non-negotiable. Pack a rolling cooler with wheels for beach or park trips, and keep an insulated tumbler 30oz full of water — the heat index is doing more damage than the raw temperature. If you’ve got a backyard pool, check your pool chlorine test strips this week, since heat speeds up chlorine burn-off.
Rays Gameday And This Week’s Concerts
The Tampa Bay Rays host the Seattle Mariners at Tropicana Field today, with an Evan Longoria Bobblehead giveaway. Since it’s a dome game, heat and storm chances won’t touch the action, though tailgaters outside should still hydrate. Grab a Tampa Bay Rays jersey or Tampa Bay Rays fitted cap before first pitch, and check Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub for remaining seats. Later this week, NE-YO & AKON hit the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre Tuesday, the Chicago & Styx show follows Wednesday, J. Cole plays Benchmark International Arena Wednesday, and Megan Moroney closes out the week Friday — grab a Megan Moroney t-shirt if you’re headed there, and plan for lingering heat at the outdoor shows.
Dinner Tonight
With heat index readings near triple digits, skip the stove: a cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are the move. A high-powered blender makes quick work of smoothie bowls, and that insulated tumbler 30oz keeps drinks cold on the patio. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Monday stays sunny and hot with a high near 96°F. Tuesday through Thursday bring the peak of the Saharan dust — meaning less rain but the hottest, driest stretch, with some interior spots flirting near 100°F. Rain chances tick up Friday with isolated showers, and Saturday looks like the best shot at scattered storms finally returning to Tampa Bay.
