Tampa Bay is baking today under sunny skies, with the temperature climbing to a high near 96°F and heat index values as high as 106°F — even hotter, up to 110°F in spots per the National Weather Service — so front-load your outdoor plans before scattered showers and thunderstorms move in after 2 PM ET.
Today’s Setup
According to the NWS forecast office in Ruskin, the Saharan Dust Layer is once again fighting an upper-level trough overhead today, and the dust is winning through the afternoon. That’s pushing storm development later than the usual 2-4 PM clockwork, with the best rain and thunder chances now arriving in the evening and overnight hours. Forecasters note Hi-Res models show weaker, less widespread storms than yesterday, with most of the bay in the 30-40% rain chance range tonight and a low around 79°F.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning through early afternoon is your window — whether you’re at the beach in Clearwater, walking Vinoy Park, or biking Bayshore Boulevard. Winds stay light out of the south-southeast at just 2 to 7 mph, so it’ll feel like standing in an oven with little breeze to cut the heat. Pack water, take shade breaks every 20-30 minutes, and a UV protection sun hat is worth having for anyone out past mid-morning.
Rain & Storm Timing
No severe weather or flash flood risk is currently highlighted for Tampa Bay from the Storm Prediction Center or Weather Prediction Center, but lightning is always the wildcard here in the lightning capital of the U.S. — head inside at the first rumble. Rainfall tonight should stay modest, generally a quarter to half an inch. Sunday brings a similar high near 95°F, but the SAL pushes storm coverage down into the isolated category, so expect just a stray shower between 11 AM and 5 PM.
Gameday, Concerts & Dinner Tonight
The Tampa Bay Rays host the Seattle Mariners today and again Sunday at Tropicana Field — since it’s a dome, neither the heat nor the evening storms touch the game, making it a smart way to escape both. Grab a Tampa Bay Rays jersey or Tampa Bay Rays fitted cap before first pitch. Looking ahead, Megan Moroney brings The Cloud 9 Tour to Benchmark International Arena on July 17 — indoors, so weather’s a non-factor. Get tickets on SeatGeek and pick up a Megan Moroney t-shirt for the show; read our full Megan Moroney concert preview for more. On patios, an umbrella base 50 lb keeps tables shaded and steady through gusty pre-storm winds. For dinner, skip the stove — a cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or a smoothie bowl made in a high-powered blender and served in an insulated tumbler 30oz beats standing over a hot pan. Storms after dark can flicker the power, so keeping a DARAN 288Wh Power Station charged, on sale for Prime members, isn’t a bad idea this time of year.
Next Few Days
A weakening front stalls in North Florida early next week, keeping the Tampa Bay area hot, dry, and dust-hazy with highs in the mid-to-upper 90s through the work week — the Nature Coast picks up a few scattered storm chances, but here in the bay it’s SAL-dominated and mostly rain-free during the day.
