St. Louis is baking again today, July 1, with sunny skies, a high near 97°F, and heat index values climbing as high as 107 degrees — so keep outdoor plans to the early morning or evening and don’t skimp on water if you’re out at Forest Park or along the Gateway Arch grounds.

Today’s Setup

According to the National Weather Service St. Louis office, the heat-building ridge has nudged east toward Knoxville and weakened slightly, but the subsidence inversion capping our atmosphere keeps gradually lowering. We’re mixing deeper into it today, which should pull down slightly lower dewpoints during peak afternoon heating — a small mercy that trims the oppressive humidity just a touch. Still, today marks the fourth straight day of this air mass, with light southwest wind at 3 to 8 mph doing little to cool things off.

Best Window To Be Outside

If you’re mowing, walking the dog along the Riverfront Trail, or hitting Grant’s Farm, aim for before 10 AM CT or after 7 PM CT. Tonight stays clear with a low around 79°F, but heat index values still run as high as 106, so evening yard work still calls for a water break.

Storms And Fire Risk Ahead

Thursday is day five of this heat wave, and per the NWS, the cap fully breaks down, unlocking the instability that’s been building. Expect only isolated, pulse-type thunderstorms bubbling up in the afternoon and evening — capable of heavy downpours and gusty winds, but the National Weather Service is not flagging a widespread severe weather or flood threat for our area, and neither the Storm Prediction Center nor the Weather Prediction Center currently list St. Louis in an elevated risk zone. Any storm-driven cooling will be localized and too brief to break the 100-to-110 heat index pattern. With yards and brush running dry after days of heat, it’s smart to have a fire extinguisher home and a fire blanket kitchen on hand before you fire up the grill this week.

What To Wear Or Bring

Think light and breathable: men’s sport sandals or quick dry swim trunks beat closed shoes today. A patio umbrella 10ft turns a deck or tailgate into shade, and a bungee cord assortment is worth packing to secure canopies against Thursday’s gusty pulse-storm winds. If you want real relief, load up an Intex River Run 2 floating lounge (see the floating lounge deal) for a Mississippi River or pool afternoon — browse more outdoor gear deals while you’re at it.

Games And Concerts In The Heat

The St. Louis Blues open Round 1 at home tonight at Enterprise Center — indoors and air-conditioned, a nice escape from the heat. Outdoors, Muse brings The Wow! Signal Tour to Hollywood Casino Amphitheater on July 5, so grab tickets on SeatGeek and pack sunscreen for the lawn. Looking ahead, the St. Louis Cardinals host the Milwaukee Brewers at Busch Stadium on July 6 — tailgaters should expect sun and heat, so hydrate before first pitch; find tickets on StubHub and pick up Official team gear on Fanatics for the crowd.

Tonight’s Dinner

Too hot to fire up the stove — a cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are the move tonight. A high-powered blender makes quick work of smoothie bowls for the kids. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Friday holds near 97°F with the heat continuing right through the holiday stretch, per the NWS discussion. Scattered storm chances become more frequent heading into the weekend, so keep an eye on the forecast if you’ve got Independence Day plans forming.
