St. Louis is looking at a hot, unsettled Thursday with a high near 93°F, heat index values up to 103, and a chance of showers and thunderstorms that could turn severe this afternoon and evening — get outdoor plans done early and keep an eye on the sky by midday.

Today’s Setup

According to the National Weather Service Saint Louis office, an MCS over northeast Kansas is spinning up a mesoscale vortex that will largely dictate today’s storm timing. Faster model guidance — which forecasters are leaning toward — would push the disturbance across the Mississippi River into Illinois by around 1 PM CT, keeping the highest storm chances over east central and southeast Missouri into southern Illinois, with lower odds closer to the St. Louis metro. A slower track would put the whole area, including Forest Park and the Gateway Arch grounds, under a storm threat all afternoon. Either way, CAPE over 3,000 J/kg and 30-35 knot shear mean any storms that fire have the ingredients to organize.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning through early afternoon is your safest stretch — get the Forest Park run, Grant’s Farm visit, or yard work done before midday. NWS pegs today’s rain chance at 51%, so don’t be surprised if it stays dry into the afternoon, but have an indoor backup ready.

Storm And Heat Risk

NWS says severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, large hail, and a few brief tornadoes are possible this afternoon and evening, with locally heavy rain continuing overnight (low near 74°F, 55% storm chance). Another round of severe storms is expected Friday afternoon and evening as highs reach 90°F. Between rounds, heat index values near 103 today make hydration and shade breaks important if you’re outside.

What To Wear Or Bring

Light, breathable clothing and men’s sport sandals work for the muggy stretches between storms. If damaging wind knocks out power, a DARAN 288Wh power station is a smart backup to have charged. Keep drinks cold in a hard cooler 52 quart if you’re tailgating or spending the day outside.

Cardinals, Blues And Tyler Childers Tonight

The St. Louis Cardinals host the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at Busch Stadium — with storm chances lingering into the evening, tailgaters should watch radar closely. Grab a St. Louis Cardinals jersey or St. Louis Cardinals fitted cap and get tickets on SeatGeek. Cardinals fans should also mark July 11 for the Cardinals vs. Braves gameday forecast and David Eckstein bobblehead night. The St. Louis Blues also play Round 3 Home Game 1 at Enterprise Center tonight — indoor and storm-proof, so find tickets on StubHub. Outdoors, Tyler Childers - Snipe Hunt plays Hollywood Casino Amphitheater tonight; check our Tyler Childers concert weather guide, bring a poncho, and pick up a Tyler Childers t-shirt with tickets on SeatGeek.

Tonight’s Dinner

Too hot to cook tonight — a cold Thai noodle salad, build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are the move. A high-powered blender makes quick work of smoothie bowls, and an insulated tumbler 30oz keeps drinks cold through the humidity. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Friday brings another round of afternoon and evening storms with a high near 90°F, along with a continued risk of locally heavy rain. NWS expects generally dry, warmer-than-average weather to settle in Sunday and carry into next week — good news for anyone browsing outdoor gear deals ahead of a drier weekend.

Upcoming Home Games
