The National Weather Service in Green Bay issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning Wednesday morning for Marathon County in central Wisconsin and southern Lincoln County in north-central Wisconsin, as a line of severe storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds pushed through the region.
The warning is in effect until 8:15 AM CDT.
At 7:18 AM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line running from near New Wood Wildlife Area to near Marshfield — the same storm axis described by the National Weather Service as stretching from roughly 27 miles northwest of Wausau northward through the southern tier of Lincoln County. The organized line-storm structure means conditions can deteriorate rapidly across a wide stretch of territory as the system advances.
Large hail and damaging winds are the primary hazards. Both are capable of causing property damage, downed trees, and dangerous road conditions. The National Weather Service is directing all residents in the warning area to seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows immediately, remaining there until the warning expires or the storms move through.
Marathon County spans central Wisconsin and includes both the Wausau metropolitan area and the city of Marshfield, placing it at the core of the warning zone. Wausau weather is being actively updated as the system tracks through. Southern Lincoln County, a largely rural stretch of north-central Wisconsin, forms the northern edge of the active warning boundary.
The storm line’s northwest-to-southeast orientation through central Wisconsin is reflected in the warning footprint. Notably, this warning arrived well before 8 AM local time — a window when residents may be commuting, engaged in early outdoor activity, or unaware of rapidly changing conditions, leaving less margin for response than a midday or afternoon event.
Marshfield weather is tracking conditions at the southern end of the warning zone in real time.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay will issue updates, extensions, or cancellations as storm behavior warrants before the current 8:15 AM CDT expiration. Residents in Marathon and Lincoln counties should consult official National Weather Service channels for the most current warning status and avoid outdoor travel in the affected area until the warning is lifted or conditions clearly improve.
