San Antonio is starting Saturday, May 23 under an active Flood Watch with a high near 84°F and a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms — have your rain plan ready before stepping out this Memorial Day weekend.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio has a Flood Watch in effect through the holiday weekend, and rounds of storms are already tracking through the Hill Country toward the Alamo City this morning. Storm motion is relatively quick — around 35 mph — which limits rainfall from any single cell to roughly a quarter to one inch. But with multiple rounds expected through Monday, the ground will stay saturated. The River Walk, Olmos Creek corridor, and any low-water crossings near Lackland AFB and Fort Sam Houston deserve extra attention. If you were counting on a River Walk stroll this afternoon, build in a backup plan.
Best Window to Be Outside
Your clearest stretch is mid-morning, roughly 9–11 AM CT. Temperatures will sit in the low 80s — pleasant enough for a quick visit to the Alamo or the Pearl District — before storm chances build toward 50% in the afternoon. Saturday night gets stormier: showers and thunderstorms are likely, with a 60% chance and a low near 69°F. Sunday offers some sunshine mixed in, but another 50% storm chance and a high near 85°F keeps the threat alive.
Flood Risk This Weekend
This is a multi-day flooding event, not a quick one-and-done storm. The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of eastern Texas in a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall through Sunday, and the National Weather Service is flagging localized flash flooding as likely through Monday. Never drive into flooded roadways — San Antonio’s low-water crossings fill faster than they look. The pattern stays active into at least Wednesday, so don’t assume the holiday weekend is your last weather day to manage.
What to Pack
A packable rain jacket stuffed into a daypack is your best investment this weekend — light enough to forget about until the sky opens up mid-errand. Add a compact travel umbrella for any time you’re on foot near downtown or the Rivercenter area. If you’re tackling Hill Country trails near Government Canyon State Natural Area, waterproof hiking boots will keep your feet dry on saturated ground.
Spurs in the Conference Finals — Game 4 Sunday
The San Antonio Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder in West Conference Finals Round 3 Game 4 at Frost Bank Center on Sunday, May 24. It’s indoors, so the rain doesn’t affect the game itself — but budget extra drive time getting downtown through storm traffic. Represent in a San Antonio Spurs jersey or grab a San Antonio Spurs hoodie for the arena chill. Still need seats? Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub before tipoff.
Rainy Day Meal Idea
Storm-soaked Saturdays were made for slow cooker chili. Load a programmable slow cooker before noon and let it work all afternoon. Prefer stovetop? An enameled cast iron Dutch oven turns out a rich beef stew with very little effort — and fills the house with the right kind of Saturday smell. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
The unsettled pattern holds through at least Wednesday. Memorial Day Monday brings another round of storms — keep any cookout plans flexible and watch NWS alerts closely.
