San Antonio wakes up to sunshine and climbing heat today, with a high near 99°F, heat index values as high as 107°F, and a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 PM CT as a weak front pushes through — get your outdoor plans done before lunch and keep water close by.

Today’s Setup

Mostly sunny skies hold through midday with a south-southwest wind around 0 to 5 mph. The National Weather Service’s Austin/San Antonio office notes that a shift in winds to the southwest and west ahead of the front could cause compressional heating and downslope warming off the Balcones Escarpment, so late morning and early afternoon could actually heat up a notch faster than recent days before rain-cooled air moves in. There’s a low chance — 10 to 30 percent — that some spots south of the city briefly see heat index readings in the 105-109°F range before clouds arrive.

Best Window To Be Outside

Get out early. Mornings before roughly 10 or 11 AM CT are your best window for yard work, a walk near the River Walk, or a round of golf before the heat and afternoon storm chance build. Golfers should tee off at first light and bring a golf divot repair tool. For sun protection on that early tee time or a fishing trip, there’s a UPF 50+ Sun Hoodie deal worth a look.

Rain, Storm, Or Heat Risk

NWS forecasters say showers and thunderstorms move in from the north during the afternoon and evening as the front works through, and some storms could bring heavy rain and gusty winds. Flash-flood-prone spots — including the River Walk and area low-water crossings — should be avoided if downpours develop; the Weather Prediction Center has a slight risk of excessive rainfall posted today for parts of the Gulf Coast region, and while San Antonio isn’t in the highest-confidence zone, any storm that fires up could still dump brief heavy rain. Lows only fall to around 77°F overnight, and Saturday night still carries a slight chance of storms with a low near 81°F.

What To Wear Or Bring

Light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a Yeti rambler water bottle are musts through the heat of the day. Storms tend to stir up mosquitoes once rain clears, so keep mosquito repellent spray handy for evening time outside near Lackland or Fort Sam Houston.

Local Events This Week

Today at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, the Oddities & Curiosities Expo runs through the afternoon if you want an air-conditioned plan. Hamilton (Touring) opens at the Majestic Theatre San Antonio on August 8 — look for tickets on SeatGeek. And if you’re up for a short drive, the Melanie Martinez - HADES: THE SACRIFICE show hits Moody Center on August 3; check tickets on SeatGeek and grab a Melanie Martinez t-shirt before you go.

Dinner Tonight

With storms holding off until after dark, tonight is prime grilling weather. Fire up the grill for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob — an instant-read meat thermometer takes the guesswork out of doneness, and a grill brush and scraper set keeps the grates ready. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Once today’s front clears, hot and dry weather takes over fast. Sunday climbs to near 101°F with just a slim early-morning shower chance before sunshine returns, and the National Weather Service expects the hot, dry pattern to continue into next week.
