Sacramento is heading into a sunny Wednesday with a high near 90°F — the tail end of this week’s heat event before a welcome cooling trend takes hold through the weekend.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service says Sacramento sees clear skies and temperatures peaking around 90°F today, dipping to near 88°F by afternoon with south-southwest winds of 2 to 10 mph and gusts up to 20 mph. The hottest stretch has already passed — the northern Sacramento Valley has been dealing with an Extreme Heat Warning through 11 PM tonight — but the Sacramento metro still sits in Moderate HeatRisk territory today. Expect low-90s in the Valley before things noticeably improve Thursday.
Best Window to Be Outside
Get your outdoor time in early. A morning walk along the American River Parkway near Goethe Park or a run on the Capitol Mall is ideal before 10 AM. After that, the combination of heat and gusty afternoon winds will make things unpleasant — and dangerous from a fire standpoint. Tonight brings a pleasant payoff: clear skies and a refreshing low around 57°F. Keep a Stanley tumbler 40oz iced and within arm’s reach all day.
Fire and Wind Risk
Those south-southwest gusts up to 20 mph, layered on top of lingering summer heat and dry air, add up to elevated fire conditions for Sacramento and the surrounding foothills. If you live in foothill communities east of the Valley, treat today as a fire-prep check-in. Make sure you have a functioning smoke detector combo pack on every level of your home and a fire extinguisher home in the kitchen or garage. A go bag emergency evacuation kit staged near the door is smart during any fire-weather stretch. And if smoke drifts in from the Sierra foothills, an N95 respirator mask smoke offers real lung protection — far better than a cloth mask.
Parker McCollum at Golden 1 Center — Saturday, June 20
Country fans, Saturday night looks great: Parker McCollum plays Golden 1 Center downtown. Grab tickets on SeatGeek and plan an easy evening out — NWS forecasters expect near to below-normal temperatures by the weekend. Show up in a Parker McCollum t-shirt or a Parker McCollum hat and you’re set.
Beat the Heat Tonight
With 90°F outside, skip the oven entirely. Smoothie bowls or a cold Thai noodle salad are the move — a high-powered blender makes both fast and satisfying. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Thursday drops to a comfortable 86°F under continued sunshine — one of the better outdoor days of the week. There’s a 15–25% chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms along the Sierra crest Thursday into Friday, per NWS forecasters, which is welcome news for the mountains but should stay out of the Valley. By the weekend, temperatures ease to near or below normal, setting up some of the nicest outdoor conditions of the month. Warmer air returns early next week.
