Red Flag Warning Targets Hudson Valley as Critical Fire Weather Develops This Afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of New York’s Hudson Valley, covering roughly ten counties from noon to 7 PM today, as a combination of strong southwesterly winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures pushes fire danger to critical levels.

The warning encompasses a broad stretch of the Hudson Valley Fire Danger Rating Area, including eastern Montgomery, Schenectady, extreme northeastern Schoharie, Albany, Rensselaer, eastern Greene, Columbia, eastern Ulster, Dutchess, and much of Sullivan County. Forecasters expect conditions to peak during the mid to late afternoon hours, when relative humidity will be at its lowest and wind gusts will be at their strongest. The National Weather Service cites south to southwest winds of 15 mph, with higher gusts likely during that window.

Red Flag Warnings are issued when a convergence of wind, low humidity, and warmth creates conditions under which a fire, once ignited, can spread rapidly and become difficult to control. The National Weather Service notes the warning reflects conditions that are either already occurring or expected to develop imminently.

The Middle Hudson Valley — a region that includes a mix of suburban communities, state forests, and open farmland — is particularly susceptible during dry, windy spring afternoons before significant green-up has occurred. Residents and land managers in the affected counties are advised to avoid any outdoor burning, and to be aware that even a small ignition source can escalate quickly under these conditions.

The warning is set to expire at 7 PM, after which winds are expected to diminish and the immediate threat should ease. The National Weather Service will issue updates if conditions warrant extending or expanding the alert.

This event is localized to New York state, with one active alert currently in effect. No additional Red Flag Warnings are indicated for neighboring states in the current data. Residents in the Albany, NY area and broader Hudson Valley region should monitor National Weather Service updates through the afternoon and take precautions until the warning expires this evening.
