Portland, OR is kicking off Memorial Day under mostly cloudy skies with a high near 66°F — but a 90% chance of rain and afternoon thunderstorms mean your outdoor plans need a rethink, and soon.

Today’s Setup

A Gulf of Alaska system is driving a major pattern shift across the Rose City today. The National Weather Service says rain will spread into the I-5 corridor and Willamette Valley around noon to 2 PM PT, with showers and thunderstorms developing from 2–5 PM — right when many backyard cookouts hit their peak. Temperatures start near 66°F but drop to around 60°F through the afternoon as the cold front pushes through. South-southwest winds of 6 to 13 mph, gusting to 24 mph, will make it feel raw, especially along the Columbia River Gorge corridor.

Best Window To Be Outside

Your best window is this morning. Forest Park trails and the Eastbank Esplanade should stay mostly dry through mid-morning. Plan to wrap up outdoor time by 11 AM. If Sauvie Island is on your Memorial Day agenda, make it an early trip and head home before noon — the afternoon will not cooperate.

Rain and Thunder Risk

This is more than Portland’s famous drizzle. The National Weather Service is flagging a real thunderstorm window from 2–5 PM, with gusts to 24 mph. Rainfall totals should stay non-hazardous — roughly a tenth to a quarter inch for most of the metro — but you won’t want to be caught outside unprepared. Toss a compact travel umbrella in your bag before you head out this morning, and after a soaking day like this, a boot dryer electric will save your favorite shoes overnight.

Allergy Alert

Here’s the silver lining for allergy sufferers: heavy rain knocks pollen out of the air temporarily. But counts tend to rebound hard once things dry out mid-week. Get ahead of it now with allergy relief nasal spray, and running a HEPA air purifier at home will help on the drier days ahead.

Upcoming Events This Week

Tuesday, May 26, is a natural indoor night with rain still at 40%: Dethklok plays Roseland Theater and Trey Anastasio takes Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall — both perfect ways to ride out a damp evening. Get tickets on SeatGeek before they’re gone.

By Wednesday, May 27, the pattern is improving — a better sign for The Black Keys at McMenamins Historic Edgefield Manor. Grab a The Black Keys t-shirt and make it a proper night out.

On May 30, the Portland Fire host the Indiana Fever at Moda Center — fully indoors and zero weather worries. Show up in Official team gear on Fanatics.

Tonight’s Dinner

With the grill sidelined, tonight is a pasta or stir-fry kind of night — warm, fast, and made for a rainy holiday. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Tuesday (May 26) stays unsettled — 40% rain chance, high near 67°F, with a low-end 10–20% thunderstorm chance. The National Weather Service signals a gradual return to warmer and drier weather by midweek into next weekend. Keep an eye on the Portland weather forecast for the latest timing.
