Phoenix is in for a scorcher this Sunday, with sunshine giving way to a high near 108°F and heat index values climbing to 110 — and forecasters are watching for evening thunderstorms that could roll into the Valley after 5 PM.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service in Phoenix says a decaying storm complex out of Sonora, Mexico is pushing gusty outflow winds into the region early today. As high pressure shifts toward the Northern Plains this afternoon, better monsoon moisture will stream into central Arizona. Storms are expected to fire along the Mogollon Rim and south Gila County, then push a strong outflow boundary into the lower deserts — including Phoenix, Tempe, and Chandler — late this afternoon into evening, bringing a chance of showers, thunderstorms, and blowing dust. The NWS also flags a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across Maricopa and Pinal Counties today, so keep an eye on the sky if you’re out near dusk.

Best Window To Be Outside

Get outside before 10 AM if you want a walk around Tempe Town Lake or an early hike — overnight lows only dip to around 88°F before climbing fast. Skip Camelback Mountain and other exposed trails once the sun is up; afternoon heat index values near 110°F make midday activity genuinely dangerous.

Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk

Today brings a widespread Moderate Heat Risk, plus that slight severe thunderstorm risk for Maricopa and Pinal Counties this evening, with gusty outflow winds, patchy blowing dust, and roughly a 29% chance of storms after 5 PM. Expect daily monsoon shower chances to continue through the week as high pressure settles into the Great Plains.

What To Wear Or Bring

Light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and constant hydration are non-negotiable today. A portable misting fan is a smart grab for backyard hangouts or watching storms build from the patio, and if you’re headed to a pool, the 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler is a good way to beat the heat.

Tonight’s Events & Games

Downtown is busy tonight: Fuerza Regida brings the This Is Our Dream Stadium Tour to Chase Field, and BRIT FLOYD plays Arizona Financial Theatre — check our Fuerza Regida concert coverage before heading out, grab tickets on SeatGeek, and gear up with a Fuerza Regida t-shirt or Fuerza Regida hat. Prescott Valley’s NAZ Wranglers also host New Mexico Chupacabras at Findlay Toyota Center tonight, an easy air-conditioned option if the heat’s not your thing.

Dinner Tonight

With triple-digit heat lingering into the evening, keep cooking simple — a quick stir-fry or pasta dinner beats standing over a hot stove or grill. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door, plus stock up on Amazon Fresh groceries for the week ahead.

Next Few Days

Monday holds steady with a high near 108°F, patchy blowing dust, and a 41% chance of afternoon storms with heat index values up to 113°F. Expect this pattern — hot days followed by monsoon storm chances after 5 PM — to continue through the week as moisture stays locked in over the Desert Southwest.
