Phoenix is in for a sunny, brutally hot Saturday with a high near 112°F and heat index values as high as 113, so plan any outdoor time for the early morning and save the afternoon for air conditioning.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service in Phoenix says a strong upper-level high (596-598 dam) is capping the atmosphere over the Valley, keeping the lower deserts dry and sunny while storms fire over the Mogollon Rim, White Mountains, and southeast Arizona high country. South wind stays light at 0 to 5 mph, and overnight lows only dip to around 89-90 before climbing back toward 91-92 by dawn — no real relief tonight.

Best Window To Be Outside

If you’re hitting Camelback Mountain, South Mountain Park, or the canal paths, go before 8 AM. Once the sun gets high, pavement and trail temps climb fast and the heat index tops 110. Evening walks after 7 PM are your other option, once the worst of the direct sun has passed.

Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk

Forecasters say storm chances are mainly confined to higher terrain today, with only a 10-25% chance any activity reaches Maricopa or Pinal County via an outflow boundary — and if one does push through, gusty, marginally severe winds and blowing dust are possible. The NWS notes monsoon rain chances should start expanding into the lower deserts by late weekend into early next week, with Sunday already carrying a slight chance of showers and storms after 5 PM alongside a high near 111. For now, heat is the dominant hazard — this is extreme, dangerous heat, so check on elderly neighbors and never leave kids or pets in a parked car.

What To Wear Or Bring

Light, breathable fabrics and constant hydration are non-negotiable. Keep an insulated water jug 1 gallon in the car or on the trail, and if you’re heading to the pool this afternoon, a pool float lounger makes the water your best cooling option once temps peak.

Tonight At Chase Field And Around Town

The Arizona Diamondbacks host the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field tonight (Aug. 8) under the roof, a smart call given the heat — outdoor tailgating beforehand will still be sweltering, so bring shade, water, and consider a portable propane grill instead of standing over charcoal. Grab Official team gear on Fanatics before first pitch, or Get tickets on SeatGeek if you’re still deciding. Looking ahead, Santana and The Doobie Brothers bring the Oneness Tour to town Aug. 14 — a Santana hoodie makes a fun pickup before the show — and Lionel Richie with Earth, Wind & Fire play Aug. 11; you can read more about that show here.

For sun protection on early hikes, there’s a deal on a UPF 50+ Sun Hoodie for just $5, and you can browse more outdoor gear deals for the season. With triple-digit heat, skip the oven tonight — a cold pasta salad or a quick stovetop stir-fry keeps the kitchen cool. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Sunday holds another high near 111 with a slight afternoon storm chance after 5 PM, and the NWS expects monsoon moisture to keep expanding into the Valley into early next week, so keep an eye on the sky for building clouds and gusty outflow.
