Phoenix is heating up fast this Monday, June 22, with a sunny high near 109°F and virtually no wind to take the edge off — and the National Weather Service warns it only gets hotter from here, with an Extreme Heat Watch issued for Wednesday and Thursday. If getting outside is on your agenda today, your window is very narrow.
Today’s Setup
A powerful subtropical high-pressure system has locked in over the Southwest, pushing atmospheric heights to around 589–591 decameters over the Valley — and those heights are still climbing. South winds stay light at 0 to 5 mph, offering zero relief. Tonight bottoms out near 82°F — still uncomfortable without AC. Tuesday rises to near 111°F before Wednesday hits near 112°F under that Extreme Heat Watch, with highs possibly reaching 115°F in parts of the lower deserts, according to the National Weather Service Phoenix office.
Best Window To Be Outside
If Camelback Mountain or South Mountain Park is on your list, go before 8 AM and carry more water than you think you need. After 9 AM the trail surface becomes dangerous. For the rest of the day, embrace the backyard — an inflatable family pool for the kids or a pool float lounger for yourself is the right call this week. Keep drinks cold all day in an insulated tumbler 30oz. While you’re gearing up, this 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler for just $24 is a backyard essential right now.
Heat Risk: This Is Serious
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Wednesday and Thursday, with forecast highs between 110 and 115°F across the lower deserts. Moderate Heat Risk is expected most of the week with localized Major Heat Risk on those peak days. Check on elderly neighbors and make sure pets are indoors during daylight hours. Never leave children or animals in a parked vehicle — not even for a minute.
Events This Week — All Indoors, Thankfully
Phoenix has a loaded week of air-conditioned entertainment, which is exactly the right vibe.
Tuesday, June 23: A$AP Rocky brings the Don’t Be Dumb World Tour to Mortgage Matchup Center. Find tickets on StubHub and grab an A$AP Rocky t-shirt to rep the show. Also Tuesday: Bob Dylan performs at Arizona Financial Theatre.
Wednesday, June 24: Killswitch Engage rocks the Marquee Theatre — a perfect excuse to spend the hottest day of the week somewhere with serious AC. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Touring) also opens at ASU Gammage.
Friday–Saturday, June 26–27: Nate Bargatze’s Big Dumb Eyes World Tour hits Mortgage Matchup Center on Friday, and 5 Seconds of Summer plays Desert Diamond Arena that same night. Saturday the 27th, the Arizona Rattlers host the New Mexico Chupacabras at Desert Diamond Arena. Get tickets on SeatGeek for any of these and beat the heat in style.
Too Hot To Cook — Here’s the Plan
Skip the oven entirely tonight. Cold Thai noodle salad, smoothie bowls, or a build-your-own wrap bar are all you need. A high-powered blender makes frozen smoothies and icy drinks effortless all week long. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Tuesday: 111°F, sunny. Wednesday and Thursday: Extreme Heat Watch conditions with highs near 112°F or beyond — the peak of this heat event. The National Weather Service notes a very slim chance of isolated showers over the western deserts midweek as modest moisture drifts in from the south, but don’t count on meaningful cooling.
