Philadelphia is kicking off Wednesday at a comfortable 76°F with partly sunny skies — but with showers and thunderstorms arriving after 8 PM ET tonight, your window to enjoy it is this afternoon.
Today’s Setup
It’s a breezy one out there. South winds are running 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, so anything loose on the deck or patio needs to be tied down or brought in before tonight. A pop-up canopy tent with weights won’t survive those gusts unanchored, and outdoor furniture covers are worth pulling out now. Down along the Schuylkill River Trail or through Fairmount Park, expect that wind to make itself known all afternoon. Allergy sufferers take note: those strong southerly winds are actively pushing pollen through the city today.
Best Window To Be Outside
Your golden hours are right now through about 6 PM ET. Boathouse Row, Clark Park in West Philly, and Penns Landing are all solid afternoon options. The National Weather Service says the bulk of precipitation holds off until evening, with thunderstorms possible after 8 PM ET. The good news: the Storm Prediction Center has no severe weather outlook for our area, and storm totals should stay light — a tenth to a quarter inch for most of Philadelphia.
Storm Timing and Risk Tonight
After 8 PM, conditions deteriorate quickly. Expect lightning, gusty winds, and steady rain before midnight. Flash flood risk stays low — the Weather Prediction Center puts the odds of exceeding flash flood guidance below 5%. That said, give yourself extra time on I-76 and Kelly Drive if you’re out after the storms hit. Before you turn in, a bungee cord assortment is handy for locking down anything on the rooftop or balcony you can’t bring inside.
This Week’s Events

Thursday (May 14): Black Veil Brides hit The Fillmore Philadelphia with a high near 68°F — lingering morning showers clear out by afternoon, so the evening should be fine. Snag a Black Veil Brides t-shirt to rep the show. Also Thursday, the Dethklok & Amon Amarth: The Amonklok Conquest plays Wind Creek Event Center — see our full weather and venue guide.
Saturday (May 16): Philadelphia Union host the Columbus Crew at Subaru Park in Chester. The National Weather Service is flagging a warm-up for the weekend, which means tailgating conditions should be excellent. Show up in your Philadelphia Union jersey and Philadelphia Union scarf and get there early to enjoy the pregame atmosphere. Find tickets on StubHub. Also Saturday, Nate Bargatze: Big Dumb Eyes World Tour plays GIANT Center — a great indoor night out rain or shine.
Grill Now Before the Rain Arrives
Wednesday afternoon is prime grilling weather — burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob before the storms roll through. Make sure your grill brush and scraper set is clean before you fire up, and take the guesswork out of doneness with an instant-read meat thermometer. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Thursday clears out by midday with a high near 68°F and westerly winds shifting in. Friday rebounds toward 71°F. The weekend and early next week look increasingly warm — the National Weather Service is signaling a significant warm-up toward very warm to hot conditions.
