Philadelphia is waking up to a hot, breezy Thursday with temperatures climbing to near 92°F and a real chance of strong thunderstorms rolling through between 2 and 5 PM ET — time your outdoor plans accordingly.

Today’s Setup

A cold front dropping south out of Ontario is the driving force today. NWS Mount Holly forecasters expect a few scattered showers north and west of I-95 between 9 and 11 AM ET — nothing heavy — but the afternoon is another story. As the front pushes through, showers and thunderstorms are likely between 2 and 5 PM ET, and the National Weather Service is carrying a Slight Risk for strong to severe storms. The main threat: damaging wind gusts, with the storms capable of producing them given steep low-level lapse rates and strong winds aloft. Southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts near 35 mph will be with us all day regardless of storm activity.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning is your window — get your Schuylkill River Trail run, dog walk, or patio project done before noon. Things stay mostly dry until mid-afternoon. If you’re heading to Citizens Bank Park for the Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets game today, watch the radar closely around first pitch. Afternoon storms tend to move through relatively quickly after the front passes, but bring rain gear just in case. A Philadelphia Phillies fitted cap and a Philadelphia Phillies jersey will serve you well in the stands, sun or showers.

Storm and Heat Risk

No SPC Convective Outlook covers the Philadelphia area today, and the WPC’s excessive rainfall risk is focused entirely on the Gulf Coast — flooding is not a local concern. But don’t ignore the severe storm window. If you hear thunder, head inside. The combination of 92°F heat and humidity also means heat stress is real — keep an insulated tumbler 30oz nearby if you’re working outdoors and step out of the sun when you can.

What To Wear or Bring

Dress light and breathable. If you’ll be out during the afternoon storm window, toss rain pants waterproof in your bag — they fold flat and weigh nothing. At home, if last summer’s heat is any guide, this stretch could test your cooling setup; a portable window AC unit is worth having in your back pocket before July. Events This Weekend

Juneteenth (Friday, June 19) turns a corner with a much nicer 85°F high, partly sunny skies, and light westerly winds — one of the better outdoor days of the week. Lincoln Financial Field hosts World Cup Match 29, Group C: Brazil vs. Haiti — arrive early, wear sunscreen, and enjoy what should be a comfortable afternoon. Also Friday evening, Jimmy Eat World - 25 Years of Bleed American plays the Skyline Stage at Highmark Mann — an outdoor venue that will be stunning under mild Juneteenth skies. Grab tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek before they sell out. For outdoor gear deals to prep for the weekend, check our latest roundup.

Dinner Idea

Nobody wants to stand over a stove when it’s 92°F outside. Cold Thai noodle salad, smoothie bowls, or a build-your-own wrap bar are exactly right for tonight. A high-powered blender handles frozen fruit smoothies in seconds, and an insulated tumbler 30oz keeps everything icy while you eat on the porch once the storms clear. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Once tonight’s front clears, conditions improve dramatically. Juneteenth Friday at 85°F is the best day of the stretch. Friday night drops to a clear, comfortable 66°F. Saturday comes in near 84°F — great conditions for the Phillies vs. Mets rematch at Citizens Bank Park. Enjoy the dry stretch through the weekend; the National Weather Service is tracking a new system that could bring widespread rainfall Monday into Monday night.
