Philadelphia is facing a dangerous Monday — temperatures near 87°F but a severe thunderstorm and flash flood threat arrives this afternoon and continues through tonight. If you’ve got outdoor plans at the Schuylkill River Trail, Fairmount Park, or anywhere outside, make it a morning trip and be inside by noon.
Today’s Setup
A surface low is tracking eastward across southern Pennsylvania this afternoon, then pushing through the Philadelphia region overnight. The National Weather Service warns this setup is “quite favorable” for both severe weather and flash flooding — high atmospheric moisture, strong wind shear, and multiple rounds of storms all in play. Rain chances start around 11 AM ET, with the organized severe threat building after 2 PM ET. Tonight’s storm probability climbs above 90%, with gusts to 25 mph and a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain expected overnight.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning only. Wrap up outdoor activity — a jog on Kelly Drive, coffee at Rittenhouse Square, errands in Center City — before noon. For the Charley Crockett concert at The Met Presented by Highmark tonight, plan to leave early and bring a compact travel umbrella and a packable rain jacket. SEPTA and surface streets may slow down as storms move in.
Flood & Severe Weather Risk
The National Weather Service explicitly flags a flash flood threat today into tonight. Low-lying areas near Cobbs Creek and Pennypack Park, and neighborhoods with poor drainage, are most vulnerable. Do not drive through flooded roads — turn around, don’t drown. Move patio furniture inside before dark. With power outages possible in a multi-round storm event, the DARAN 288Wh Power Station at just $90 for Prime Members is practical storm prep to have on hand.
What To Wear
Skip the sneakers today. Waterproof hiking boots are the right call if you’re out on foot. Pack a compact travel umbrella and keep a packable rain jacket in your car — more weather is coming later this week. Check out outdoor gear deals if you need to restock before the next round hits.
Events This Week
Tuesday begins to improve. Noah Kahan brings The Great Divide Tour to Citizens Bank Park on Friday, June 26 — grab a Noah Kahan t-shirt for the show, or Find tickets on StubHub if you still need seats (weekend forecasts are still taking shape, so check back as Friday nears). Saturday, June 27 brings World Cup Match 68 — Croatia vs. Ghana — to Lincoln Financial Field. Snag Official team gear on Fanatics ahead of kickoff, or Get tickets on SeatGeek if you’re still searching. Wale & Smino also play The Fillmore Philadelphia that same evening on the Everything Is A Lot… Tour.
Tonight’s Dinner
Storm nights call for slow cooker chili or a pot of beef stew. Load your programmable slow cooker in the morning and dinner handles itself while the thunder rolls through. Or go stovetop with an enameled cast iron Dutch oven for a rich, hearty stew. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Tuesday drops to near 80°F with partly sunny skies possible and northerly winds helping clear the humidity, though around a 50% shower chance lingers through the afternoon. Wednesday and Thursday trend drier. The National Weather Service notes another cold front approaching late this week — expect one more round of showers and storms before next weekend. It’s an active pattern, so keep an eye on forecasts through the week.
