Orlando is waking up to a partly sunny Thursday with a high near 89°F — but a 70% chance of afternoon thunderstorms means anyone headed to Disney, Universal, or SeaWorld needs to make the most of the morning hours and have a shelter plan ready before noon.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service in Melbourne explains it well: deep tropical moisture is surging in on southwesterly flow today, pushing precipitable water values to 2.0–2.2 inches. That’s a loaded atmosphere. A sea breeze collision is expected to fire convection mainly east of Orlando through the afternoon, but storm cells will push inland through the theme park corridor and into downtown by early-to-mid afternoon. Expect the highest storm coverage between roughly 2 PM and 9 PM ET, with activity tapering overnight.
The Weather Prediction Center has flagged a Marginal Risk of Excessive Rainfall across the region today. Locally heavy rain is possible, and NWS specifically warns of a limited threat of urban and poor-drainage flooding — think International Drive, Colonial Drive underpasses, and low-lying neighborhoods near Lake Eola. This is a multi-day pattern through early next week, so the ground is getting saturated.
Best Window To Be Outside
This morning is your window. Skies hold partly sunny through roughly 11 AM ET before storm chances ramp sharply. Rope-drop visitors to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, or Universal Studios are in good shape — just track radar and be near covered attractions or a building by early afternoon. Golf courses and sports fields should wrap up by late morning.
Beach Warning
NWS is maintaining a High Risk of life-threatening rip currents at all Atlantic beaches in Central Florida today, including Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna. Entering the surf is strongly discouraged. Stick to the pool.
What To Wear or Bring
Heat indices will climb into the low 100s by midday — dress light and breathable. Before you walk out the door, slip a packable rain jacket and a compact travel umbrella into your park bag or backpack. Neither takes up real estate, and both could save the afternoon when the sky opens up.
Events This Weekend
Tomorrow night (May 29), “Weird Al” Yankovic brings his Bigger & Weirder 2026 Tour to the Kia Center — fully indoor, storms irrelevant. Get tickets on SeatGeek before they’re gone.
Saturday, May 30, Roberto Carlos performs at the Kia Center. Another indoor night, so weather won’t dampen the fun — grab a Roberto Carlos t-shirt for the show. Find tickets on StubHub if you haven’t already.
Also on May 29: Whiskey Myers w/ Southall plays the outdoor Riverfront Park - Cocoa Village stage. That’s about an hour east, right in the coastal storm corridor — keep that compact travel umbrella within reach and watch the evening radar before heading out on the 528.
Dinner for a Rainy Evening
A stormy Thursday evening calls for slow cooker chili or a pot of beef stew. Load up a programmable slow cooker before you leave this morning and dinner practically makes itself. Or go low-and-slow on the stovetop with an enameled cast iron Dutch oven for something richer. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Friday looks like a carbon copy: mostly sunny through late morning, then storms likely after 2 PM ET, high near 89°F. The National Weather Service says this pattern — afternoon and evening storms, heat indices in the low 100s — continues through early next week. Morning outdoor plans are safe; afternoons are not.
