7-Day Forecast

Today 83°Partly Sunny...
Thu 77°Sunny
Fri 78°Sunny
Sat 78°Mostly Sunny
Sun 79°Mostly Sunny
Mon 81°Chance Rain ...
Tue 80°Chance Rain ...

New York City is in for a warm, sticky Wednesday, with highs near 83°F, partial sunshine, and a slight chance of rain showers arriving between 2 PM and 5 PM ET — toss a compact travel umbrella in your bag if you’re heading out this afternoon, but there’s no need to cancel outdoor plans.

Today’s Setup

A humid air mass is sitting over the five boroughs, and a slow-moving cold front will try to spark scattered showers and a few thunderstorms as it approaches this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service’s New York office. The best chance for any storms sits over eastern and southeastern parts of the forecast area, where higher moisture and instability — CAPE values around 1000-1500 j/kg — could support locally heavy downpours and gusty winds. Manhattan and the western boroughs carry just a 15% chance of showers. Temperatures actually dip from 83°F down to around 78°F in the afternoon as the front nears, then skies clear tonight with a low around 67°F and a light northwest wind near 8 mph.

Best Window To Be Outside

Late morning through early afternoon is your clearest stretch before the shower risk ramps up between 2 and 5 PM. If you’re planning time in Central Park, the High Line, or Prospect Park, get out early. Yankee Stadium hosts the New York Yankees vs. Pittsburgh Pirates today, and while the ballpark sits on the lower-risk western side of the forecast area, keep an eye on the sky if you’re tailgating or catching an early game. Gear up with a New York Yankees jersey or New York Yankees fitted cap, and grab tickets on SeatGeek if you’re still deciding.

Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk

No severe weather watches are in effect, but the NWS is flagging a high risk of rip currents for ocean beaches — think Rockaway and Coney Island — through Thursday, so stay out of the surf past your knees if you’re beach-bound this week. The cold front should finally clear the area by this evening, with drier, less humid air filtering in overnight into Thursday.

What To Wear Or Bring

Light, breathable clothing works best in today’s humidity. Keep that compact travel umbrella handy in case a shower catches you between subway stops this afternoon.

Heading to Broadway tonight? Hamilton is playing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre — grab tickets on SeatGeek before curtain.

Tonight’s Dinner

With showers possible this afternoon, it’s a good night to let something simmer instead of firing up the grill. A programmable slow cooker turns out an easy beef stew or chili while you’re out running errands, or reach for an enameled cast iron Dutch oven for a low-and-slow pot of soup. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Thursday turns sunny and noticeably drier with a high near 77°F and light northeast wind. Friday stays pleasant near 78°F and sunny — solid tailgating weather for the New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodgers series opening at Citi Field, which continues Saturday. New York City FC also hosts Chicago Fire FC at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. After today’s storm chance, it’s shaping up to be the best outdoor stretch New York has seen in days.

Upcoming Home Games

Plan around the forecast — grab tickets, gear up, and see kickoff conditions.
