New York is heating up fast today, Tuesday, with sunny skies and a high near 92°F — and it’s really just a warm-up. The National Weather Service’s OKX office says Wednesday pushes even higher, toward 97°F with heat index values as high as 100. Front-load your outdoor plans this week; mornings are your friend, 1 PM to 6 PM is not.

Today’s Setup

Expect a sunny day with a southwest wind at 10 to 16 mph, keeping things a touch breezy along the waterfront. Tonight stays mostly clear with a low around 79°F. Forecasters note a gusty southwest flow near the coast today, so Battery Park City and Brooklyn Bridge Park will feel marginally cooler than inland spots like the Bronx or Central Park’s Great Lawn. Wednesday flips the wind to the west, and NYC’s metro corridor east into central Long Island could see readings close to 100°F.

Best Window To Be Outside

Get your Central Park jog, Hudson River Greenway ride, or Prospect Park walk done before 10 AM. By midday, pavement and subway platforms turn brutal — commuters waiting on the 4/5/6 or the L will want to plan around peak heat, not through it.

Heat, Wind, And Fire Risk

A Heat Advisory is in effect for eastern Long Island, NW Suffolk, and coastal southeast Connecticut through Wednesday, and the NWS expects heat index values of 95 to 100 across the rest of the region, including the five boroughs. Gusty winds could also knock over loose patio furniture, so anchor anything tall — an umbrella base 50 lb is cheap insurance for rooftop decks and balconies. With the air staying warm and dry, it’s also a smart week to double-check home safety basics: a smoke detector combo pack and a go bag emergency evacuation kit are worth having ready regardless of season.

What To Wear Or Bring

Swap cotton for a lightweight linen shirt, and if you’re headed to a pool or the Rockaways, quick dry swim trunks and men’s sport sandals beat soggy sneakers every time. Bring water everywhere — this isn’t the week to skip it.

Yankee Stadium And Broadway This Week

The New York Yankees host the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday, July 17 at Yankee Stadium — tailgating should be warm but manageable as temperatures ease off this week’s peak. Grab a New York Yankees jersey and look at tickets on SeatGeek before the Bronx crowds show up. If you’d rather stay cool indoors, Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on July 15 is air-conditioned relief from the heat.

Tonight’s Dinner

It’s too hot to turn on the stove — a cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or a smoothie bowl (a high-powered blender makes quick work of it) all beat standing over a hot pan. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Thursday eases to a high near 89°F with more sun breaks, and the NWS says seasonable warmth carries into the weekend before a frontal system brings New York’s next real shower and thunderstorm chance. For more outdoor gear deals to get through the heat, check out our outdoor gear deals page.
