Tue 91°Sunny
Wed 95°Sunny

New York is looking at a warm, sticky Thursday with a high near 82°F, partly sunny skies early, and a good chance of showers and thunderstorms moving in after 2 PM ET — so plan to have outdoor errands wrapped up before then.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says temperatures will actually fall through the afternoon, from near 82°F down to around 79°F, as storms arrive on a southwest wind at 7 to 12 mph. There’s a 50% chance of rain today with a quarter to half inch possible, and storms linger into tonight before 11 PM ET, with lows near 72°F rising to around 74°F overnight. Friday turns hotter and muggier, high near 87°F, with heat indices climbing into the lower-to-mid 90s and another round of afternoon storms (38% chance) after 2 PM.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning through early afternoon today is your window — a walk in Central Park or along the Hudson River waterfront before 2 PM beats the storms entirely. Friday’s the same setup: get outside early and hydrate before the heat and thunderstorms build in the afternoon.

Storm & Flash Flood Risk

NWS forecasters in the Area Forecast Discussion flag an isolated strong-to-severe thunderstorm and localized flash flood threat both this afternoon and Friday afternoon, driven by high moisture (precipitable water values of 2 to 2.25 inches) and the chance storms train or back-build over the same spots. The Weather Prediction Center has placed the broader Mid-Atlantic under a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall today, with the heaviest totals more likely south and west of the city — but an isolated flash flood risk is still signaled for the NYC/NE NJ metro. Subway riders should watch for ponding at low-lying stations and underpasses during any downpour.

What To Wear & Weekend Plans

Keep a packable rain jacket handy for the afternoon commute both days. The Mets host the Kansas City Royals tonight, July 9, at Citi Field, then open a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox Friday, July 10 through Sunday, July 12 — Friday’s game carries the same storm and heat risk as the rest of the day, so check radar before first pitch. Gear up with a New York Mets jersey or New York Mets fitted cap, and grab tickets on SeatGeek or tickets on StubHub. Across town, the JAY-Z 30 concert at Yankee Stadium Friday shares that same afternoon storm timing — a JAŸ-Z t-shirt makes a good souvenir either way. If you’d rather stay dry, Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre are both indoors Friday and Saturday.

Dinner & Next Few Days

With storms rolling through this afternoon, it’s a good night for slow cooker chili or beef stew — a programmable slow cooker or an enameled cast iron Dutch oven does the work while you stay in. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon, including Amazon Fresh groceries, and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door. Looking ahead, NWS forecasters expect the weekend to turn mainly dry with seasonably warm temperatures, so Saturday and Sunday should be much better bets for Citi Field tailgating and any outdoor plans around the boroughs.

Upcoming Home Games
