New York is in for a partly sunny Sunday with a high near 84°F — a genuinely nice afternoon to get outside, but thunderstorms are on track after 8 PM ET, so time your plans carefully before the sky turns.
Today’s Setup
Southwest winds of 5–18 mph will keep the boroughs breezy through the afternoon, and rain chances stay low (just 12%) until evening. Skies will be partly sunny, temperatures peaking near 84°F before dipping to around 81°F later in the day. Then things change fast. The National Weather Service has issued a slight risk of strong to severe thunderstorms for the metro area, with the main window from late afternoon into overnight — 8 PM to 5 AM ET. Expect 80% precipitation probability and a quarter to half inch of rainfall possible once storms organize.
Ocean beach alert: The National Weather Service is also warning of high rip current risk at ocean beaches, including the Rockaways and Coney Island. Swim only where lifeguards are present today.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning through early afternoon is your sweet spot. Central Park, the Hudson River Greenway, and Brooklyn Bridge Park will all be comfortable. If you’re planning a backyard cookout, get it going by early afternoon — don’t wait until 5 PM. Before those storms arrive, stow loose cushions and grab outdoor furniture covers to protect your patio setup overnight. A DARAN 288Wh Power Station just $90 for Prime Members is solid insurance if you’re concerned about a power blip during overnight storms.
Gameday and Event Weather
Mets fans at Citi Field: The New York Mets host the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field today, June 14. Early innings should play under partly sunny skies — but if the game runs deep into the evening, keep a radar app handy. Show up in a New York Mets jersey and a New York Mets fitted cap and Get tickets on SeatGeek if you’re still looking.
Hamilton tonight: Hamilton (NY) plays at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on June 14 — you’ll be warm and dry inside, but budget extra commute time around the storm window. Find tickets on StubHub if you still need seats.
Yankees this week: The New York Yankees host the Chicago White Sox on June 16 and June 17 at Yankee Stadium — both days look excellent (more below).
Fire Up the Grill This Afternoon
Today’s 84°F partly sunny afternoon was made for the backyard grill. Burgers, steaks, and grilled chicken with corn on the cob are all perfect calls while the breeze is at your back. A Father’s Day grilling set is a great excuse to put flame to something, and an instant-read meat thermometer keeps every protein exactly where you want it. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Monday clears out beautifully — sunny with a high near 75°F and northwest winds 12–17 mph. It’s one of the better early-summer days in the New York weather forecast, ideal for lunch in the park or that Yankees opener at Yankee Stadium. Tuesday holds at 73°F with near-zero rain chance. The National Weather Service is watching a robust low pressure system that may affect the area later this week — check back for updates as that develops.
